o The initial DOE contact was Ryan Miller, but he moved to another DOE office in November 2024. Ryan was responsive to emails. Cheryl Copeland is the follow-on contact, but she has not been responsive.
The goal of this project is to develop the process technology required to 1) separate gallium from the metal chloride co-product stream of TiO2 pigment production and 2) pu rify it to a concentrate suitable for further refining to a metallic product. These developments will create a new, domestic source of gallium production, an element the U.S. currently does not produce. With initial resource estimates of the annual elemental gallium content processed through the New Johnsonville, TN facility of 10,000 kilograms per year, successful development of this technology would help onshore a significant fraction of the gallium metal the U.S. is currently importing- in 2022 the U.S. was 100% import reliant for 12,000 kg of gallium metal. More than 50% of this imported gallium metal came from China, which has restricted exports of gallium metal starting in 2023. The Chemours team will develop this work between our Chemours Discovery Hub R&D facility in Newark, DE and our New Johnsonville, TN production facility, leveraging our research and process development capabilities with our process expertise at the Johnsonville plant to achieve this goal.
