Meeting to discuss:
1. The House Committee on Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs invited the Department to testify at legislative hearing on February 5, 2025. One of the bills is H.R. 412, to authorize the Bay Mills Indian Community of the State of Michigan to convey land and interests in land owned by the Tribe. We're working with OCL to draft our testimony but will need a decision whether DOI will provide witness or decline. Will need a decision ASAP.
2. Lumbee Recognition EO - Attached is a draft workplan to meet the 90-day timeframe from the President's EO. We'll likely need 30 mins for this topic.
3. Part 83 regulations - Unrelated to the EO, the department published a rule on January 15 that, absent postponement, will take effect on Feb. 14. The rule is a substantive change that has legal risk associated with ongoing litigation that we'd like to brief Charlie on. This topic will also need 30 mins.
