Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of former Tallahassee Mayor James Ford
On Wednesday, October 11, 2017, the former mayor of Tallahassee, James Ford, passed away. Ford became Tallahassee's first African-American mayor in 1972, serving a total of three terms. Ford was a Tallahassee native, earning his bachelor's and master's degrees from Florida A&M University. He proudly served in the United States Navy and Army. Prior to his election to the Tallahassee City Commission, Ford spent 37 years as a school teacher, administrator, and principal in the Leon County Schools.
As a symbol of respect for the memory of former Mayor Ford, and his service to Tallahassee, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the City Hall of Tallahassee, Florida, and at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, from sunrise to sunset on Monday, October 16, 2017.
