Good Afternoon Mike
Great talking to you Wednesday about horsemeat. I spoke with Dr. Deb Schmidt, Staff Nutritionist today about the use of horsemeat as an animal food product, primarily carnivore
[cats, dogs, some bears](see comments below). As we discussed horsemeat is primarily imported into the U.S. from Canada and a limited amount from Mexico. As far as we know there are no horse slaughter plants in the U.S., but there are continued stories about them being opened or opening soon ( https://www.newstarget.com/2016-02-23-usda-approvesslaughterhouses-producing-horse-meat-for-human-consumption.html ).
I have also attached an article from the Denver Post from July 2017 (http://www.denverpost.com/2017/07/19/wild-horse-destruction-vote-passes/ ) reporting on the wild horse population in the West and concern over potential Federal legislation.
Hope this information helps. Please let Cynthia know if you need any additional information or have any questions.
Cheers
Jack
From Deb Schmidt:
This is accurate to the best of our understanding. Please let us know if you need anything else.
Miliken Meat Products, LLC (http://www.millikenmeat.com/index.html) in Toronto, Canada supplies our nutritionally supplemented, raw Feline Diet for our animals. It is a processed product formulated to be nutritionally complete.
Nebraska Brand Meat (http://www.nebraskabrand.com/products.htm) imports horse carcasses from Canada and/or Mexico to produce their nutritionally complete meat products because there are no horse slaughter plants currently open in the United States. We have bought horse chunk meat from them, but not consistently.
