Megyn Kelly -- The anti-Media Matters

WAS RUPERT MURDOCH THE SOURCE IN THAT UN-BYLINED FOX NEWS STORY about Jared Kushner? His rep didn't have anything to say about that when Morning Media got in touch. But there sure was a lot of speculation yesterday that FNC's "source familiar with the matter" was the 21st Century Fox chief and Kushner pal himself. The May 29 article, "Jared Kushner didn't suggest Russian communications channel in meeting, source says " got a second wind yesterday when President Trump retweeted a link to it, and media gossips were quick to point out that "Rupert Murdoch regularly talks to Jared Kushner and now this curiously unbylined story turns up on Fox News," as the FT's Matthew Garrahan put it. Our colleague Jack Shafer: "What if the source for that Fox story--which has no byline--is Rupert Murdoch?"
NPR media correspondent and Murdoch Kremlinologist David Folkenflik has an insightful run-down: "Fox News' Refet Kaplan tells NPR that Catherine Herridge, listed at bottom was lead reporter & after vetting, others wrote from her notes ... Fox report, sympathetic to Kushner & relying on sole source, cut agst NYT WaPo etc ... Given her past record, Herridge's involvement as central reporter gives the item more credence as a journalistic exercise; But.... Herridge moments ago on Shep Smith's show attributed story to 'a source who has talked to Kushner tells Fox News...' You know who talks to Kushner as well as Trump? Fox News acting CEO & effective owner Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch loves gathering and disseminating political gossip to editors et al. One of his delights as a newspaper proprietor."

MEGYN KELLY GAVE SOME INTERVIEWS AHEAD OF HER NBC DEBUT THIS SUNDAY - "I was not bom to be a political news anchor," the former Fox News host told POLITICO'S Hadas Gold . "I'm not going to miss the crazy news cycle. The audience enjoyed the show and I'm grateful for it. But it wasn't who I was and it isn't who lam... While I will cover politics ... I don't want to do only that. It's not enough for me personally." The new Megyn Kelly? "I want to foster more human connections and make people feel something better than the constant outrage." That said, the premiere of "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly" will kick off with an interview that's about as political and "crazy news cycle" and "constant outrage" as it gets: Vladimir Putin.
REVOLVING DOOR: SCOTT PELLEY OUT AT 'CBS EVENING NEWS' - The New York Post's Page Six scooped last night and we confirmed independently that the anchor is leaving the program, and is expected to be shifted to "60 Minutes" full-time. A CBS source said

of Pelley's office being cleaned out yesterday, "Scott arranged to have his office moved out on his own. No one asked him to do that." Gotta love the Page Six attitude here: "We reported in December that Pelley was on his way out of the anchor chair on the flagship news show ... At the time, the network denied the story, telling us, 'There's no truth to this.' But now, there is a lot of truth to it." An official announcement about the change is expected today. Guest anchors will fill in for Pelley until a permanent replacement is named, and as of late last night it was unclear who that will be. Dylan Byers : "Sources now say that while Pelley has moved out of CBS News, he will anchor show again / have chance to say goodbye."
Elsewhere....
-- The BBC's Ian Pannell is joining ABC News as a senior foreign correspondent based in London, after more than 20 years with the U.K. news giant.
-- NPR has hired Pallavi Gogoi, a veteran of CNN and the Associated Press, as chief business editor.
-- Longtime Pitchfork president Chris Kaskie is leaving the influential music publication after 14 years, and less than two years after Pitchfork was acquired by Conde Nast. Billboard has more.
WHAT BETTER PLACE FOR A P.R. ROLLOUT OF THE RIGHT'S ANSWER TO MEDIA MATTERS than Sean Hannity's Fox News show? That's where conservative commentators Brian Maloney and Melanie Morgan last night introduced their new organization, the Media Equality Project, which has kicked off "Operation Fight With Fire" as part of "#StoptheScalpings" campaign calling for an end to the advertiser boycotts of right-wing media folk. Hannity's been on a jihad lately about what he sees as a left-wing plot to get rid of figures like himself and Bill O'Reilly, who was ousted from Fox News recently amid an explosive sexual harassment scandal, after Media Matters and other groups encouraged advertisers to pull out of his show. Morgan said backing Hannity was a "simple choice between good and evil," while Maloney promised to give liberal groups "a taste of their own medicine." Their first target? MSNBC's Rachel Maddow: "We want to call attention that Maddow has gotten away with being a conspiracy wacko for years and years."
More details in yesterday's announcement: "As long as Media Matters continues to attack conservatives, we will return them the same kindness. We begin with Rachel Maddow who has been the biggest purveyor of lies and propaganda in the media today. Like Media Matters, we will now inform the public and the advertisers about who they are financing."
Related, via the AP: "The USAA financial services firm is reinstating its advertising on Sean Hannity's Fox News Channel program after receiving heavy criticism for its initial decision from many of the military members and veterans that it serves."
MEANWHILE, HERE'S CNN'S STATEMENT ON KATHY GRIFFIN'S TRUMP BEHEADING - "We found what she did disgusting and offensive. We are pleased to see she has apologized and asked that the photos be taken down. We are evaluating New Year's Eve and

have made no decisions at this point."

HEAT STREET EDITOR HEADED TO FOXNEWS.COM? Sister outlet The Wall Street Journal reports: "21st Century Fox FOX is looking to revamp Fox News's digital news operation, and part of the solution could come from sister company News Corp. Discussions are under way for Noah Kotch, the editor of News Corp's right-leaning news site Heat Street, to take the reins ofFoxNews.com, people familiar with the matter say. The interest in Mr. Kotch comes after months of stop-and-go talks in which Fox explored acquiring Heat Street, the people say. Such a deal now appears unlikely." Lukas Alpert has more.
BILL O'REILLY'S NEXT BOOK - It's a juicy tell-all about the scandal that ended his twodecade career at Fox. KIDDING!!! It's a Revolutionary War-era non-fiction narrative and the latest in O'Reilly's "Killing" series. The AP has the details: "'Killing England: The Brutal Struggle for American Independence' will be published Sept. 19, Henry Holt and Co. ... The book will be co-written by O'Reilly's longtime collaborator, Martin Dugard. The six previous 'Killing' books, which include 'Killing Lincoln,' 'Killing Reagan' and 'Killing Kennedy,' have consistently sold more than 1 million copies each in hardcover ... O'Reilly said he chose the American Revolution because he had never read a book that explained it 'top to bottom'... O'Reilly ... said he wasn't worried that sales would fall off without having his show to promote his books."
NEW POPULIST FOX NEWS SHOW PREMIERES SUNDAY - "The Next Revolution" - announced in March and hosted by FNC contributor, British Conservative Party figure and Brexit backer Steve Hilton -- will lift off with "interviews with employees from the Silicon Valley who have not opened up about their political views for fear of backlash," the network said yesterday. "Additionally, a segment... 'SwampWatch' will provide opinion and analysis on which industries, agencies and political groups in Washington D.C. and beyond are having an effect on President Trump's pledge to 'drain the swamp.'" Press release.

DETAILS ABOUT NYT'S NEW 'READER CENTER' - It was announced a few months ago, and some Times watchers were scratching their heads about how this thing would function differently than the public editor. Now we have a clearer picture, via Times deputy managing editor Cliff Levy, who explained in a memo yesterday : "Hanna" Ingber, formerly of the international desk, "will head a team that will partner with reporters, columnists and editors in the newsroom and in opinion on a range of projects, including: "Improving how we respond directly to tips, feedback, questions, concerns ... Helping to make sure that we are as transparent as possible in how we explain our coverage ... Broadening our efforts to allow readers to make their voices heard on our digital platforms ... [and] Overseeing our Facebook Live initiative."
In other Times news: The company says its newsletter subscriptions "have more than doubled to over 13 million in April 2017, from 6 million newsletter subscriptions in April 2014."
IF 'OBSERVER' WERE OFFERED UP FOR SALE, WHAT EXACTLY WOULD BE LEFT TO SELL? WWD reports: "A significant number of the Observer's skeleton staff has been let go less than a week after Ken Kurson resigned as editor in chief of Observer Media. The onetime salmon colored weekly newspaper, which Jared Kushner acquired in 2006, has been struggling to find its footing. ... On Tuesday morning, four staffers were laid off... It could not be determined if any of the remaining editorial staffers, which total around 12, will be let go."
MORE CUTS COMING TO CONDE NAST? "No," business chief Jim Norton told WWD in
an interview. And what about the rumor that Norton was brought in to get the company ready for
a sale? "I mean I can't address it but I can tell you, it has never come across my desk." More:
