Scott: Fort Lauderdale Area Added More Than 23,000 New Jobs Over the Year FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Fort Lauderdale area added 23,200 new private-sector jobs in the last year, the fourth-highest number of jobs among all Florida metro areas. Fort Lauderdale's unemployment rate dropped to 3.3 percent in October, down 1.4 percentage points from one year ago. Statewide, Florida businesses created 127,400 new jobs in October and the unemployment rate dropped to 3.6 percent, the lowest rate since February 2007. Since December 2010, Florida businesses have created 1,448,300 new private-sector jobs. Governor Scott said, "Economic growth is happening all over the state as businesses have added more than 1.4 million new jobs since December 2010. The Fort Lauderdale area gained more than 23,000 jobs over the year and unemployment is down to 3.3 percent. This progress is great news for Florida, and we will continue to ensure that Florida remains the best state in the nation to live, work and raise a family." The industries with the highest growth over the year in Fort Lauderdale were education and health services with 9,800 new jobs and construction with 4,200 new jobs. Fort Lauderdale remains among the top four metro areas in job demand in Florida with 21,762 job openings in October. The area also had the fourth-highest number of openings for high-skill, high-wage STEM occupations with 5,529 online openings. In the last year, 216,000 people entered Florida's labor force, a growth of 2.2 percent. This rate is more than four times the national labor force growth rate of only 0.5 percent. In October, 23,082 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Broward and the state's other 23 local workforce boards.
