HILT A recent study by Mr. John Stafford, ICI Petrochemicals and PlasticsEngland, regarding a survey of worldwide AGS cases as of January 1982, contained some interesting statistics. A few key items are listed below. Years Country No AGS Cases Ave. Exposure Period Western Europe Belgium France Germany Italy Norway Sweden United Kingdom Total 1 14 21 3 1 5 _L 52 Ave. 18 24 17.2 19.3 22 24.5 22.3 20.7 North America United States Canada Total 28 10 38 Ave. 24.5 20.4 23.4 Rest of World Czechoslovakia Japan Yugoslavia Total World Total: 2 15.5 2 19.5 4 21.2 8 Ave. 19.4 98 World Ave.: 21.6 The most common job classifications involved in the 98 cases were Reactor Cleaners and Reactor Operators. Of the 98 world cases reported, 40 cases are clustered in four factories: BFG, Louisville.................. 11 BFG, Shawinigan.................. 10 Dynamit, Nobel............... 10 UCC, S. Charleston.... 9 N HC C-ldl OCC0002 Of the 52 western cases, k2 are in 10 factories including the 21 German cases which are in four factories. Of the 38 North American cases, Jk are in four factories out of a total of k9 factories. Fourty-one North American plants had no AGS cases: BFG, Shawinigan.................... BFG, Louisville.................. UCC, S. Charleston........... Goodyear, Niagara............... 10 11 9 4 Two other interesting facts noted: 1. The annual incident rate of reported deaths from AGS does not seem to be decreasing* 2. The study indicated that no known USA cases of AGS have occurred south of the 36th parallel, which is that part of the country below the southern border of Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky and Virginia. The author felt that this may be a factor in case distribution from the standpoint of exposure level differences due to climate and open air plants in the deep south and closed plants in the north.
