FACTS ABOUT PARLON
This booklet is designed to acquaint you with the many uses oj Parlon-based maintenance paints. Parlon is the registered trademarkJor chlorinated natural rubber as produced by Hercules Powder Company.
ARLON is known to be one of the most
practical film-forming materials which
arc unaffected by acids, alkalies, salts,
moisture,. and fungus growths. Both as a con
crete and metal finish, Parlon-bascd paintsafe es
pecially fitted for use under conditions too severe
for regular paints and enamels, making them
ideal finishes for use in many types of main
tenance painting.
Parlon paints can be formulated to offer stub
born resistance to oxidizing agents, bleaches,
cleaning compounds, and vapors and fumes. As
a finish on cement, Parlon coatings resist the
attack of alkalies within the concrete and at the
same time withstand corrosive agents attacking
the surface. Used on metal, Parlon gives excellent
protection because of its impermeability and
resistance to corrosive attacks from acid and
alkali solutions and fumes.
-
.base and economy of application arc among
the outstanding features of Parlon maintenance
finishes. When desired, paints can be applied to
metal after simple wire-brush cleaning, without
the need for sandblasting or other expensive
measures required to provide a bare-mcial base
for the film. Of course, even greater durability
and longevity arc achieved with a properly pre
pared surface. The thinned paint itself can be
used as a primer on concrete, and a durable finish
can be applied to unaged cement surfaces. Special
Parlon primers arc available for Parlon finishing systems applied to metal to build up adequate film protection against extreme exposures to acids, chemicals, and corrosion.
Parlon finishes dry with a speed approaching that of lacquer, and are available in a full range of rich colors. Many have a tilelike durable gloss which stays color-fast and hard under strong cleaners, including caustic solutions and gasoline.
Hercules Powder Company docs not make Parlon paints, but quality protective coatings based on Hercules chlorinated rubber are avail able from coast to coast from more than 400 reliable manufacturers under their own brand names. In each instance, the finishes used in all of the case histories illustrated in this booklet are standard formulations supplied by a manu facturer of Parion-based paints. Many Parlon formulators also supply other types of chlorin ated paints for industrial finishes and specialized uses.-Full application-and-usc data arc available from the Parlon paint supplier you may select to help you with your own maintenance problems.
A complete technical booklet describing the full range of properties and uses of Parlon will be sent to you on request. Consumers of Parlon are invited to call upon Hercules for help in making the most effective use'B^ Parlon as a product or maintenance finish, or in any of its many other applications.

HOW TO PAINT
ARLON PAINTS may be applied by brush

faces, and resist attacks both from the alkalies in cement and corrosive elements to which the paint is exposed. On hard-troweled concrete, such as floors, a preliminary wash of 5 to 10% muriatic acid, applied with scrub brush or swab, etches the surfaces to provide a better bond and longer service life. Thinning the first coat to approximately 50% of normal consistency enables the film to anchor firmly to the cement surface. Subsequent coats at brushing body can be applied to obtain desired film thickness. Etch ing on side walls and surfaces which have not been hard-troweled is unnecessary. Three coats are usually recommended for floors; not less than two coats should be applied to side walls.
SPRAYING PARLON
When Parlon paints are to be applied by sprjy, substantial thinning is required. Paint con sistency will vary with the spray equipment and technique in use. Usually, equal parts of paint and thinner are required. A simple rule for those Parlon products which are recommended for spray use is to add thinner until "cobwebhing" is eliminated. The use of excess amounts of thinner cuts film thickness, necessitating an extra number of coats to obtain the required protective coating. Since Parlon paints dry faster when applied by spray, additional coats can be applied at shorter intervals than when brushing is employed^ Wherever feasible, the application
PAINTING ON IRON, STEEL, AND OTHER METALS
of Parlon by spraying is highly recommended.
The surface to be painted must be reasonably free from rust and dirt. Wire brushing, followed by dust brushing, is adequate in most instances. For painting new metal surfaces or unpainted surfaces, special Parlon primers are available to obtain maximum adhesion and film build-up where exposures are extreme.
Parlon should be applied with a cleaa, dry brush, and flowed on with a full brush. Unneces sary working or brushing out, especially on
