As I mentioned, there is a lot of work being done by young people in parks and on public lands across the country. These young people are employed by conservation corps, such the one I work with, and are part of a larger public-private partnership effort also known as the 21st Century Service Conservation Corps (21 CSC). I wanted to briefly share some information that provides background to the discussion that we had. The 21 CSC is a public-private partnership that puts young people to work on public land and engages more than 25,000 returning veterans and young Americans each year. These young people and veterans help complete backlogged maintenance and infrastructure projects on public lands including trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, campground improvement and more. The 21 CSC is currently being implemented by a variety of conservation corps organizations nationwide. A few key points are below and attached are documents describing 21 CSC with a sampling of support for this work. Key Points: U Builds rural and urban economies by: 1) supporting the recreation, restoration and natural resource economies; and, 2) facilitating in-demand job skills development that business want in young people and returning veterans. Provides opportunities for all Americans to serve their country by leveraging the hard work of patriotic Americans in the common purpose of strengthening and preserving the most beautiful country in the world. Strengthens America's infrastructure by investing in America's unique and vital natural assets that are critically important to hunters, anglers, recreationalists and rural economies. Modernizes the way government works by using locally-based, cost effective and innovative private-public partnerships with non-governmental organizations to get things done. I will be back in town from June 13th -15th for meetings with a few other key folks and would love to sit down with you to describe 21CSC in more detail and discuss how it fits within your scope of work. If you are not available during any of these days, there are folks that live here in DC that represent the 21 CSC who would be available to meet with you outside this time frame.
