DRAFTING TECHNIQUES
1. Purpose
These guidelines are written to assist In the preparation of drawings for bid packages produced by Engineering Services. All groups are asked to comply to the best of their ability with the suggested techniques.
2. General Rules
A. Plan ahead. Keep the drawing clean, uncluttered and with an overall professional appearance.
8. Avoid "artistry" by eliminating any unnecessary elaboration that adds nothing to the message.
C. Do not redraw repetitive details. D. Eliminate unnecessary views.
E. If It Is easier to describe In a note, don't draw It.
F. Use dashed lines and shading for clarlflcation^ be consistent throughout the package.
G. Make fullest use of standard symbols.
H. Avoid excess fabrication details.
I. Use templates for drawing coenon shapes and symbols.
J. Drawing to scale Is preferred. Minimize NTS.
K. Develop and use computer generated standard detail drawings.
L. Eliminate extensive hand-lettering. M. Use photography.
N. Use common team-generated backgrounds where practical.
O. Issue vendor drawings as bid and/or construction documents.
3. Lettering
A. (l/8-inch) size ts the smallest permissible for hand lettering and shall be used In all notes and dimensioning, Including numerators and denominators of fractions. Letters should be slanted right or vertical.
B. (3/16-1nch) size shall be used for section letters, titles of views and for major call-outs. They shall be upper case slanted right or verticil.
C. Title Block
See examples at Appendices A A B.
ST0406746

.4 Drawing Orientation and North Arrow Position
A. The north arrow shall be placed In the lower right-hand corner on all plan drawings In which the entire drawing Is to be oriented.
B. The north arrow may be placed near the plan view when a single drawing shows plan and/or details and sections. Use the smaller north arrow.
C. On all new work, except Isometrics, orient the north arrow so that It points up or to the left. Every plan drawing for all disciplines on a job shall be oriented In the same direction. Exceptions must have prior approval of the Project Engineer.
D. Piping isometric drawings require a special north arrow - see template.
E. A template will be available and Issued upon request for drawing the north arrow and certain other standard shapes:
InNKy>0 x-2
OoDftc
kN
S. Dimensions A. Show only the dimensions necessary for completion of work portrayed. B. Arrange dimensions carefully; If possible show all dimensions outside object outlines. C. Do not repeat dimensions, except In cases where necessary to clarify drawing. D. Dimension line arrow points shall be solid and sharp. E. When a dimension Is not to scale on a drawing that is drawn to scale, letter NTS (not to scale) after or under dimension figure. Dimension line to be broken.
ST0406747
?U90<!0iS
F. Dimensions on engineering drawings can be classified generally as follows:
1. Locating dimensions * Shall be established and communicated by the Project Engineer. These serve to tie down the placement of
objects and are measured from datum lines. These may be shown as dimensions or coordinates; however, the measuring point must be common to all disciplines, shown on the plan drawing; l.e., bottom of steel, centerline channel nozzle, etc.
2. Intermediate - These can be used to show one object's relationship to another and are generally in feet and Inches.
6. Line Height
Make all line work sharply and distinctly.

7. Signatures
A. All signatures on 'Drawn By," 'Designed By," "Checked By,' "Approved By," etc., In the title block shall give Initials, last name and date. All drawings, Including schedules and Index sheets, must be signed off completely before release by design.
B. The 'Drawn By' and Title Block must be filled In and dated when drawing Is started.
8. Notes
A. Notes of a general nature are sometimes necessary to define conditions or requirements that will affect the overall contract criteria. These notes, when needed, shall appear on the right hand side of the first drawing of a particular discipline.
B. When Information can be better conveyed with a note. It should be used. However, specific notes should not be displayed In the general notes since they pertain to a particular Item. They should be In close proximity to the Item to whtch they apply.
C. Notes designating contractor furnished Items should be used with discretion. Generally, the job specifications and/or schedules will list the owner furnished material, leaving the remainder to be contractor furnished.

14. Cross'References
A. Drawing Cross-Reference
1. Section, details, notes and Mtchllnes generally require cross-reference notation to direct the reader to other drawings. Certain abbreviated form may be used for sections and details that appear on drawings of the same discipline, but the entire drawing number must be used In the following situations:
1.1 Where reference Is made across discipline lines.
1.2 Whenever the reference Is to a drawing bearing a different suffix from that on the sheet.
1.3 On all references to notes.
1.4 On all match lines.
B. Detail Numbering and Reference
Identification and reference to details must be clear and straight forward. Two basic methods of detail reference are recommended.
1. Detail Drawings - Where one or more "B" size drawings consist largely of details that are cited In various places throughout the drawings, the details shall be numbered serially within each discipline. Such details shall be designated:
/HV-Detall No.
\XX/--Dwg. No.
Unless the package has differing suffix numbers. In which case the detail shall be designated
BX-Xl-XXXX
Detail No.
2. Local Details. Those details drawn for convenience near the view on which they are called out shall be Identified alphabetically to avoid confusion with those described In the preceding paragraph. Thmy aha 11 bm labs led thumi
DETAIL "A".
Reference shall be made to details In the following manner:
DETAIL A
3/8" - I1---------Br-H-!XX ---
(or other scale) (or "This ftvg")
Drawing number on which detail Is shown
ST0406751
C. Section Reference end Identification
1. Sections shall be identified by double alphabetic letters ("A-A", "B-8", etc.) which should never be duplicated on a single plan drawing, except when referring to the same sectional view (l.e., grade beam, trench or other "typical" sections). When possible, section marks should point upward or to the left. Avoid cutting sections from sectional views. Section marks shall be made as follows:
ituow it
If the sectional plane Is offset, the offset line should be
The reader Is directed to the sectional view by the drawing number shown on the section mark. As with detail crossreferencing, the entire drawing number must be used if the suffix Is different from that on the drawing from which the section Is cut:
Drawing on which section appears.
B2-XX-XXXX
B2-XX-XXXX
2. Sectional views shall be Identlfed thus:
Section "B-8" 3751 rp-- mm
(or other scale)
Plan or elevation drawing on which section Is cut.
A section should never be labeled simply "Section A" or Section B"; always use the dual letter ("A-A", "B-8", etc.) In Its title.
ST0406752
IT0406753
15. Drawing Issue Record
A. Rarely Is a drawing prepared, Issued only one time and then
retired. As a rule, with or without changes in the drawing, It
will be Issued two or more times for fabrication or field work and/or for reference purposes with other drawings.
B. The history of the various Issues of a drawing shall appear In the Issue block provided. For all Issues, the date, the accompanying specification number, the reason for Issue, the revision and an Identifying remark shall be entered on the Drawing Issue Record. A drawing may be Issued without revision for bid and contract for fabrication, for bid and contract for Installation, and one or several times for reference; thus 5 more Issues without revision as shown In Example 1.

16. Scope of Work
A. A given drawing often contains Information related to several construction contracts and Is therefore Issued more than once during the course of a project. It Is necessary, each time, to define what part of the work shown on the drawing Is to be done by the contractor to whom that particular Issue Is directed. It Is essential that this definition of work scope be clear, accurate and Incapable of misinterpretation.
B. Scoping a drawing. If no other changes are made. Is not considered a revision to the drawing and therefore a revision mark or revision notation Is not required.
C. A revision Is the addition, deletion or change to anything on the drawing after It has been Issued for fabrication, bid, or construction purposes.
0. Methods of Scoping
1. Scoping with Lists and/or Schedules
Lists and/or schedules (equipment lists, line schedules. Instrument lists or schedules, etc.) shall be used to show scope of work by Indicating the contract numbers on the list or schedule or by notes.
2. Scope Clouds on Drawings
When It Is not practical to Indicate the scope of work by schedules, the work to be done can be Isolated on the drawing by marking a cloud around It (on the reverse side of the original). Conversely, It Is often possible to cloud only that part of the drawing which Is not a part of the contract. The contract number shall be added to that scope cloud to Identify the contract to which the scope cloud applies. Avoid using straight lines on scope clouds.
ST0406754
IT0406755
3. Contract Break Lines on Drawings Contract break lines nay be used to Indicate scope of work on a drawing. Example: M102-31104^.^H105-31033
4. Scoping by Hatching or Shading This technique can often be used to Identify new or existing Items on the drawings. Any such technique Is permissible, provided It Is clear and definitive. It must be explained In a note that Identifies the hatching symbol (preferably by sample). All drawings for a project shall be consistent.
5. Scoping by Notes Scope of work can also be shown sometime more clearly with a note on the drawing.
6. Scope Not Shown on the Schedule, Lists or Drawings Scope of work in some Instances may be defined In the job specification and need not be shown on the drawings (e.g., grouting, Insulation, grating, painting, underground, etc.).
7. Deleting Items by use of tape Is prohibited. Revisions; Changes on the Drawing A. A drawing may be altered during the course of work on a contract;
revisions may result from detecting a dimensional or other error or they may be required to add, delete or relocate equipment, or for other similar purposes. Its difference from scope of work definition Is that It constitutes a change to the drawing. B. Identification of Revised Orawlngs: The Revision Mark 1. The first change of a drawing Is Identified as Revision 'A*.
Revision letters Increase alphabetically through Z and then begin at "AA", "AB*, etc., again. Letters "I* and "0* are not to b used. 2. The revision mark Is an equllaterlal triangle enclosing the revision letter. The triangle on the template should be used to draw It In the revision block.
ST0406755
$10406756
3. The revision mart eppeers on the drawing near the changed or effected parts or directly touching the revision cloud. Both the revision narks and clouds are drawn free-hand on the reverse side of the tracing. Avoid using straight lines In revision clouds.
4. The revision nark Is also placed In the revision block, but on the front side with the normal drafting pencil and the template.

Sample for B, C and E Size Drawings
5. When all available space for revision notes has been used, the oldest revision note will be erased and the space used for the new revision.
C. Procedure To Be Used in Revising Orawlngs:
1. Existing revision clouds are erased fron the reverse side of the drawing.- This does not apply to scope clouds for contracts that are still In progress.
2. Required changes to the drawing are made.
3. Each change Is clouded and a revision mark Is made next to each revision cloud.
4. Appropriate notes, Indicating the specific nature of the revision, are added to the revision block. "General revision" Is not preferred.
18. Issue for Reference Only
A. Frequently drawings are Issued that do not show any work to be performed; they simply assist In lending perspective to the contract package. Appropriate notation must be made in the Drawing Issue Record.
19. Demolition
A. These drawings may be photos or sepias of existing drawings showing
existing facilities with those Hems to be demolished dearly defined. See Section IX for use of "X" to Indicate demolition drawlngs.
