EPA Lowers Mandate For Cellulosic Biofuel, Keeps Ethanol At 15B Gallons
The Des Moines Register Jason Noble July 5, 2017
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released new mandates Wednesday for the amount of renewable fuel that must be blended into the nation's fuel supply.
The agency said the proposed Renewable Fuel Standard "reflects demand for 2018."
It kept the total amount of conventional ethanol that must be blended into the nation's fuel supply at 15 billion gallons.
But it dropped the level of cellulosic biofuel, considered the next generation of ethanol, to 238 million gallons from 311 million gallons.
"Increased fuel security is an important component of the path toward American energy dominance," said EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt. "We are proposing new volumes consistent with market realities focused on actual production and consumer demand while being cognizant of the challenges that exist in bringing advanced biofuels into the marketplace."
The proposed standard set for conventional ethanol, or corn ethanol, matches the level set by Congress.
