Sure, we realize not all might get in the press release but the Dept. Comms shop can add this to their talking points when they get questions. btw, we will be sending all questions to DOI. I think that is the process when the DOI issues the press release. Thanks, Karen

Hello Steve,
Per your request, here are some edited talking points for the NPR-a lease sale. You may
want to
, but we wanted to give you more info
rather than less. (b) (5)
An update for you on the process -- What we (BLM-AK) understand is that the Department's communications shop will issue the press release themselves, so we won't do that. We understand that they will release it Thursday afternoon, unless they get inquiries on Wednesday (tomorrow) when it goes live on the Federal Register web page. I am copying
our DC Communications shop in case I am wrong about this. Thank you, Karen

Karen, Here are some factoids related to the NPR-A and Oil and Gas Leasing.
-BLM has in place 210 best management practices for companies who acquire a lease and eventually drill in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. These best management practices were established in the 2013 Integrated Activity Plan which was developed through extensive consultations that considered the viewpoints of Alaskans who live in the region, tribal governments, the State of Alaska, industry, environmental organizations and other stakeholders and federal partners.
-In developing the IAP, more than 400,000 public comments, two days of public meetings and visits with North Slope leaders were conducted in August 2012.
-The Final IAP/EIS for the NPR-A was released in December 2012. The BLM hosted seven public meetings and Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act subsistence hearings in North Slope villages as well as meetings in Fairbanks and Anchorage. Also, following release of the Final IAP/EIS, the BLM conducted meetings in communities on the North Slope to receive recommendations on future ongoing outreach efforts with communities located within or near the NPR-A. -Engagement with local stakeholders continues throughout the development of a lease
including visits and consultation with North Slope Borough villages in the NPR-A. The Department understands the important role that subsistence plays in Alaska Native life and will ensure that all development is done responsibly and provides continued access to the resource.
-Current drilling technology allows for smaller footprints and less impacts to the environment, which are part of our best management practices. -Current discoveries in NPR-A have far exceeded previous government estimates of the oil and gas potential in the reserve. ConocoPhillips Inc., Alaska's first production well in NPR A is producing an initial 26,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) into the TransAlaska Pipeline System. Conoco anticipates their authorized Greater Mooses Tooth 1 and proposed GMT 2 will produce approximately 30,000 bpd respectively and their recent Willow discovery to provide an additional 100,000 bpd.
-The NPR-A, approximately the size of Indiana, is contained largely within the North Slope Borough. The North Slope Borough stretches across the entire North Slope, including ANWR, and is roughly the size of Michigan.
Comments received on the lease sale included approximately 41,000 form letters and 1,200 unique comments in favor of keeping the lease acreage as is and approximately 900 comments requesting to increase acreage.
