Gypsum Plaster, Building Lime, Plaster Bases and Accessories
From the industry leader, every type of system for modern construction
Giant rotary calciner removes water from crushed gypsum rock--early step in plaster manufacture.
HE plastering products of United States
TGypsum have earned the overwhelming preference of the building industry for one reason alone: performance.
This record of performance extends through the complete U.S.G. line--broadest in the industry--of plaster and lime products, plaster bases and accessories. It rests largely on the compatibility of these components--all designed by U.S.G. to work together. Coming from a single source, they are most capable of satisfying the specific requirements of the job.
The unchallenged leader in developing plaster
products and systems, U.S.G. also ranks first in
. meeting the specific needs of today's building
- design. This results from careful refinement of
existing products plus the origination of historic
U.S.G. "firsts", such as gypsum partition tile,
gypsum lath, truss-design studs, perlited plasters

TYPES OF GYPSUM PLASTERS PLASTER PRODUCTS 3
U.S.G. gypsum plasters lead the field in consistently meeting the highest requirements of quality and time-saving appli cation. The most comprehensive research in the industry, combined with superior manufacturing facilities, maintain them as the finest piasters obtainable.
Four types of United States Gypsum plastering products are covered in this catalog: (1) Basecoat Plasters, (2) Finish Coat, Gauging and Ornamental Plasters and Finishing Limes, (3) Veneer Plasters, (4) Special Moulding and Casting Plasters. Application directions and specifications are available in other U.S.G. literature.
For the beauty and durability of which plaster is capable, rigid requirements should be followed as to number of coats applied. Three-coat work is mandatory on all metal lath and on edge-supported gypsum lath used in ceilings; threecoat work is desirable on all gypsum lath; two-coat work is acceptable on unperforated gypsum lath when properly supported, and masonry plaster bases. Exceptions are noted below for veneer plasters.
In the column at right are general recommendations listed in the order of preference--No. 1 in each case can be expected to produce the highest quality results. Suggested precautions are:
Warehousing--Always store plaster in a dry, well-ventilated warehouse. Rotate stocks by shipping oldest material first.
season shipment is made from the plant.
Dolivoring--Protect plaster bags from moisture, both in transit and stocking on jobs. Wet bags cause trouble.

Note: Float Finish 1 and Trowel Finish 3 (except over metal lath) are the only finishes recommended for use over a basecoat containing lightweight aggregate. Finishes 1, 2 and 4 (smooth trowel) provide high abrasion resistance and because of their hardness must be used over a comparably hard basecoat.
4 BASECOAT PLASTERSGYPSUM PLASTER. LIME. BASES & ACCESSORIES
Basecoat plasters are applied to bases of masonry or lath, and support the finish coat. Their primary functions are to cover the base and provide a durable, continuous coat to receive the finish coat.
There are three types of basecoat plasters: gypsum, lime and Portland cement. Gypsum is the most widely used because of itB workability and economy. Portland cement is used for exterior work and certain specialized uses, while (as a basecoat plaster) lime has been replaced by the more modern products.
U.S.G. gypsum basecoat plasters are specifically formulated to control setting time and working characteristics. They can be applied by either hand or machine methods.
REO TOP Wood Fiber Plaster is a gypsum plaster containing fine particles of selected wood fiber. It may be used with the addition of water only; however, when used over masonry plaster bases, 1 cu. ft. of sand per 100 lbs. of plaster must be added, and when used as j. scratch or brown coat 1 cu. ft. of sand may be added. Wood fiber plaster can be applied to all standard lath and masonry plaster bases; it is strongly recommended as a scratch coat for metal lath.
. Wood fiber neat weighs approximately 14 lass than a sanded
. . . gypsum basecoat; has nearly twice the compressive and
. -- tensile strength of sanded plaster; generally provides greater
fire resistance than sanded gypsum plaster at slightly higher
5^1 cost. Complies with ASTM C28 and Federal-Specification--

lightweight aggregate meeting ASTM C3S. Complies with ASTM C28 and Federal Specification No. SS-P-00402B, Type II.
STPUCTO-BASE Gypsum Plaster is a special gypsum basecoat plaster that develops higher strengths than conventional plasters. It is recommended for such areas as handball courts, hospital corridors, schools, etc., or wherever an exceptionally high-strength basecoat plaster is necessary. Complies with Federal Specification SS-P-00402B, Type II, and ASTM C28, "gypsum neat plaster", including a strength require ment of 2800 psi compressive strength.
STRUCTO-UTE Gypsum Plaster is a mill-mixed perlite aggregated gypsum plaster which requires the addition of water only. It is formulated in two types: Regular--for use over gypsum or metal lath; and Masonry--for use on high suction unit masonry base only.
Structo-Lite weighs less than half as much as sanded
basecoat plaster; has a "k" factor of 1.74, providing three
times the insulation of sanded plaster. For this reason
Structo-Lite is not recommended for use with radiant-
heated panels, nor for use over metal lath when a smooth
trowel lime finish is to be used. The added fire protection
afforded by Structo-Lite is the outstanding contribution of
the product. Over-all cost is comparable to job-mixed light
weight aggregate plaster. Complies with Federal Specifi
cation^SS-P-00402B, Type I, and ASTM. C28. for gypsum
ready-mixed plaster.
j ' <:/
Portland Cement-Lime Plaster is used for interior applications where high moisture conditions exist, or as an exterior base coat for stucco. Prepared on job in following proportions:
Scratch and Brown Coats--Mix MORTASEAL, Mason's Lime with Portland cement and sand in accordance with ANSI A42.2, Type L. Suggested proportioning: scratch coat--1 bag Portland cement, bag lime, 5 to 6 cu ft. sand; brown coal-- 1 bag Portland cement, 1 bag lime, 6 to 7 cu. ft. sand.
. Finish Coal--Oriental Exterior Finish Stucco (mill-mixed), or a float (white or colored) or texture finish plaster. "

FINISH COAT PLASTERS PLASTER PRODUCTS 5
finish plasters serve as a leveling coat over the basecoat to provide a durable surface with the required resistance to abrasion. Some finishes are used as a base for decoration while others provide the final finished surface themselves.
Some types of gypsum finish plasters require the addition of water only; others are a blend of gypsum, lime and water, or of gypsum, lime, sand and water. They are selected according to job requirement for texture, color, hardness, sound absorption and for compatibility with the basecoat.
Three general classifications of finishing materials are (1) prepared finishes; (2) smooth trowel finishes; (3) sand float finishes. The finish coat serves as a leveling coat, as a base for decoration and provides the required resistance to abrasion. Gauging plasters impart an early hardness and strength, minimizing the shrinkage characteristic of lime, finishes may be trowel, float, texture, spray, or a combi nation of these methods.
EXTERIOR FINISHES
ORIENTAL Exterior Finish Stucco is a mill-prepared, waterresistant finish for use over Portland cement-lime basecoats only. Water only is added. Float, texture, stipple sponge, spatter-dash or rough coat finishes are easily applied; not designed for smooth trowel finish. In white and 7 colors for hand or spray application.
EPOXICAL Wall Matrix is a high-strength design medium for creating beautiful and durable building surfaces. Consisting of two components--epoxy resin and a hardener to which sand is added--Epoxical embeds exposed aggregate on exterior and interior surfaces with powerful bonding action. Eight times lighter than concrete, Epoxical helps reduce dead load.
Other advantages include: great versatility--applies easily over concrete, concrete block, brick, Portland cement stucco basecoat, exterior grade plywood, cement asbestos board; low cost--applied cost is (a) about one-half that for exposed concrete paneling, (b) significantly less than .for quarried

stone veneer, (c) when applied over 8' concrete block, usually no more than the cost of 4' face brick backed by 4' common brick; fast setting--allows immediate seeding of aggregate. Hardens in 1 to 6 hours, depending on tem perature, with total curing time of 48 hours. Weatherresistant and unaffected by freeze-thaw cycling, Epoxical Matrix is available in six attractive colors plus white.
INTERIOR FINISHES
DIAMOND Finish Plaster is an interior finish designed to provide exceptional surface hardness--1M times as great as a l-to-3 job mix of regular gauging and lime. Mill pre pared; requires addition of water only, thus saves labor at site. Provides greater resistance to cracking and delamina tion; has stabilized set, excellent troweling characteristics. Two formulations: Regular Set, (or use over conventional sanded gypsum basecoat, and Quick Set, for use over thin veneer basecoat such as Imperial Basecoat Plaster.

Proper use of U.S.G. plaster bases and plasters provides the *
secure bond necessary to develop strength and resistance to
abuse and cracking. A "mechanical" bond is formed when
plaster is pressed through the mesh or holes of the lath,
forming keys on the back side--as with metal lath or per- forated gypsum lath. A "suction" bond is formed when gyp- _ _ r -'t?
sum plaster is applied over gypsum lath, rigid insulation and
masonry bases; the tiny needle-like plaster crystals penetrate ;J
into the surface' pores of the base'by suction. JWhen per- a
forated gypsum lath is used, both suction and mechanical
bonds are developed.^,

The special gypsum core of this lath is faced with multi-layer
laminated paper designed to check plaster slide and resist
lath sag. As illustrated at right, the outer layers (1) are made
super-absorbent to draw moisture from the plaster mix so
uniformly and so quickly that the plaster takes on anti
slump strength before it can slide; the inner layers (2) are
chemically treated to form a positive barrier against moisture
penetration, thus preventing softening of the gypsum core,
which may cause sag after plaster is in place.
The face paper is folded around the long edges of all three types of gypsum bases; in addition, the ends of Imperial and USG R.H. Bases are square-cut and finished smooth.
These bases are fabricated in thicknesses of V%% 14" and and in eight different products for specific uses as listed
below. All 16' and 24' widths comply with ASTM C37 and Federal Specification SS-L-30c, Type I. Veneer bases comply with ASTM C588.
Regular ROCKLATH Plaster Base is recommended for nail or staple application to wood and nailable steel framing, for dip attachment to wood framing, steel studs and suspended metal grillage, and for screw attachment to USG Metal Studs and Furring Channels.
Perforated ROCKLATH Plaster Base is identical with Regular Rocklath except that $' round holes are punched through the lath 4' o.c. in each direction, one M" diam. hole for each 16 sq. in. of lath area. This provides a mechanical key in
addition to the natural plaster bond, and obtains higher fire ratings. Not recommended for attachment to ceilings, either wood framing or metal grillage, where the only support provided is by dips at edges.
ROCKLATH FIRECODE Plaster Base is a gypsum lath which combines all the advantages of Regular Rocklath with additional resistance to fire exposure--the result of a spe cially formulated core containing special mineral materials.
Long Length ROCKLATH Plaster Base is manufactured for use in constructions requiring floor-to-ceiling-height lath, such as the Solid Rocklath and Plaster Partition System and the USG Exterior Wall Furring System. Lengths are mill-cut as required up to 12 ft.

Foil-Back ROCKLATH Piaster Base offers all the advantages ; - of Regular RoCKLATHasa rigidplasterbase, ismade in the
same sizes, but has bright aluminum foil laminated to the back side. This creates an effective vapor barrier at no addi tional labor cost, to combat moisture condensation--a com mon cause of peeled exterior paint, warped siding and rotted studding. Its vapor permeability of 0.67 perms is well below the FHA permeability limit of 1.00. In addition, Foil-Back Rocklath provides positive insulation value when installed with the foil facing a l/i' minimum air space. When used as a ceiling, under winter heating conditions its resistance value is 2.69; in retarding downward heat flow in summer, its effectiveness is nearly double for a resistance value of 4.88 including air space (see table below).
Corrosion and normal dust accumulation exert negligible effect on the vapor barrier and insulation characteristics of Foil-Back Rocklath.
Long Length Foil-Back ROCKLATH, also with aluminum foil laminated to the back side, is used primarily for furring exterior masonry walls. Lengths are mill-cut as required up to 12 ft.; formed with square edges. Thermal resistance values are as follows:

IMPERIAL Plaster Base is a special gypsum lath in large sheet form, with strength and absorption-characteristics designed for use with Imperial Plasters. Available in Regular, Firecode and Firecode "C" core, 48" wide, H' or *A' thick, 8- to 12-ft. lengths. Both FntEOODE types have fire rated cores which add fire protection and are U.L. listed. The >4' to s4* Imperial Finish Plaster is applied after joints have been covered with Imperial glass fiber lino-weave tape. USG #900 Corner Bead is used. Using the Firecode "C" base, the system qualifies for ratings of up to two hours and 53 STC in metal-frame and wood-frame assemblies.
USG R.H. Base is a specially fortified large-size gypsum lath, used with Red Top Radiant Heat Plasters in electric cable ceilings. Nailed or screw-applied to wood joists; screwapplied to USG Metal Furring Channels or RC-1 Resilient Channels; joints are reinforced with IVi wide Imperial glass fiber tape. The system improves heat emission and resistance to heat deterioration.
INSO-BAK Mineral Fiber Rigid Insulation is specially formu lated for one-step furring, insulating and lathing interiors of exterior masonry and monolithic concrete walls while meet ing noncombustible requirements for Class A construction. It does not emit toxic gases when exposed to fire. One side of the insulating base provides optimum adhesive bonding; the other side is roughened for use with Imperial Veneer Plasters. The rigid insulation is laminated directly to walls with Durabond 500 Adhesive. After joints have been finished with Imperial glass fiber lino-weave tape, base is finished with `4' to !4' Imperial Basecoat Plaster and *4' finish plaster. Inso-Bak also may be used with USG Z-Furring Channels and screw-attached Imperial Plaster Base and plaster or Sheetrock SW Gypsum Panels.

USG %' Riblath comes in a herringbone mesh pattern with %' V-shaped ribs running lengthwise of the sheet at 4M' intervals, with inverted intermediate */fi' ribs. The heavy ribs provide exceptional rigidity. Used when supports are spaced more than 16' o.c. and for 2' solid studless metal lath and plaster partitions. Also used as a centering lath for concrete floor and roof slabs. Unsuitable for contour plaster ing or resilient application. Minimum ground thickness must be 1'.
USG M" Riblath provides a herringbone mesh pattern with
%' deep V-shaped ribs lengthwise of the lath at 6' intervals.
It is a structural lath, providing the dual functions of center

12 PLASTER BASES GYPSUM PARTITION TILE
Pyrobar Partition Tile is a precast, kiln-dried gypsum tile for building non-load bearing fireproof partitions. It is the original gypsum partition tile--improved many times, still the leading product of its kind. Because of its light weight--30 to 50 percent lighter than other commonly used masonry units--Pyrobar Tile is ideal for use in office buildings and other structures requiring alterations to suit tenants' needs. Partitions built of Pyrobar require much less structural steel to support them. It is made in 12' x 30' size--2H SQ- ft. of wall surface per side of each tile--in four thicknesses with indented surfaces, in hollow and solid types as follows: 2* Solid, 3* Hollow for column fireproofing and vent shafts 3* Solid, 3* Hollow, 4* Hollow and 6* Hollow, all for partitions and column fireproofing Pyrobar Tile offers economical installation because of its fewer joints than with smaller masonry units. Its machinemoulded units lay accurately to form a level surface, require less plaster and mortar than other types; easily cut, handled and maintained. It also is the most compatible masonry plaster base for gypsum basecoat plasters. As another advantage, Pyrobar provides the greatest fire protection per inch of thickness of any commercial partition assembly; fire ratings up to 4 hours. It offers excellent sound transmission loss ratings when plastered two sides, further improved by resilient lath and plaster facing on one side. Complies with ASTM C52 and Federal Specification SS-T00316a. Portland cement and lime mortars do not bond adequately with Pyrobar: RED TOP Partition Tile Cement should be used. Likewise, Portland cement or lime plasters cannot be used over Pyrobar Tile. Red Top Gypsum Plaster is recommended.

Estimating Method--Ceiling Components: for making quick quantity estimates of channels and tie wire required in suspended ceilings, this "rule of thumb" method is widely used: (1) Determine surface area in square feet. Example: Ceiling area 30 X 100 ft. - 3,000 sq. ft. Divide by 9 to determine square yards of metal lath required. Assume standard suspended ceiling construction of 1H' runner channels 4 ft. apart, and %' furring channels either 12', 13 W or 16' apart, depending on type and weight of metal lath used and allowing for channels adjacent to walls and for channel splices. (2) Quantity of 1M' channels 4 ft. apart-- divide sq. ft. area by 3.2 (3000 divided by 3.2 -- 938 lin. ft.). (3) Quantity of Ji' channels 12' apart--multiply sq. ft. area by 1.1 (3000 X 1.1 - 3300 lin. ft.). (4) Quantity of l4` channels 16' apart--multiply sq. ft. area by 0.8 (3000 X 0.8 -- 2400 lin. ft.). (5) Figure tie wire at approx. 10 lbs. per 100 sq. yds. of lathing.
