INTRODUCTION
MCS 911 (Pydraui AC-A, winter Grade 21) is a fire reaiatant air compressor lubricant for operation at low ambient temperatures, This formulation was developed to eliminate Aroclor 1254 from the Pydraul AC, Winter Grade 28 blend and to uae oresyl diphenyl phosphate to replace trieresyl phosphate.
SYNOPSIS Of PROCESS MCS 988 is prepared by blending Aroclor 5442 with eresyl diphenyl phosphate and blue dye. The blended product is filtered throuqh a simple filter to reaove any stray debris from raw materials or blending and is transferred to containers or storage.

PROCESS IN DETAIL
Tha blinding operation nay ba earriad out in any auitabla natal or glass linad vassal* The natariala ara not corrosiva and carbon staal aquipmant is suitable. An agitator should ba provided.
To tha clean. dry vassal charge tha orasyl diphanyl phosphata (COP), Addition of tha Aroclor 5442 will dapand on local prafaranea for handling. Tha Aroclor can ba added as a crushed solid or in tha aolten liquid state.
Aroclor 5442 is a resinous. glassy solid at roon teaparatura. In this stats it is friable and can bo crushed to snail chunks for addition to tha heal of CDP. if addition is aada in tha aoltan stats. Aroclor 5442 should bo heated to ISO to 200r (12 to >30. At HOP viscosity is 300 to 300 centistokes and at 200r, SO to 120 os.
Tha dya should ba carefully naasured on a suitable scale or , balance and added as a solid to tha botch. Motet relatively snail changes la dye concentration or incosplete nixing can causa batch-to-batch color variations.
It is suggested the blend bo warned to 125 to 150P (30 to (50 and agitation continued for sufficient tine to insure oonplete com ponent nixing. Thirty ninutee to one hour should bo sufficient, tower blending tsnperatures nay bo used if experience indicates satisfactory nixing. Meat fron aolten Aroclor 5442 nay bo suf ficient to raise batch tenperature. The low viscosity of Aroclor 5442 at 200*F will aid dispersion in phosphate ester. The batch is than circulated through a polishing filter. Mangles are taken as .required for analytlcel purposes. The batoh nay be held for pos sible viscosity adjustment or ba aent to storage. After blending is oonplete. it is reconmnded that the tonperature be reduced to MO to 12>P (2 to 4>C). Prolonged exposure at higher temperatures nay cause sons product quality datarloration.
DtSCOMMIOM OP IIX>RTAHT VARIABLES
The eoet la^ortant specification property of MC8 >tl is viscosity. Adjustnents in the blend should be nade to keep the 100P viscosity within the required specification range.
If the 100P viscosity is low. add Aroclor 5442. One lb of Aroclor 3442 per 100 lb of blend will increase the 100P viscosity about o.t centistokes.
If the 100P viscosity is high, add CDP. One lb of CDP per 100 lb of bland will dacraasa tha 100P viscosity about 0.1 es.
Tha quantity of dye addad should ba carafully maasurad on a suitsbla snail balanca or seals. This is important to insura unlforn color fron batch-to-batch.

Another caution mentioned in the previous eeetion concerned pro longed heeting. It it suggested thst maximum taiq>eratureB of
12$ to 150F be limited to 2 or 3 hours. Also, manner of heating
the batch should control film temperatures so there are no significant hot spots. Prolonged heating may cause gradual
darkening of the product as well as gradual increase in acidity due to decomposition of the COP.

ANALYTICAL METHODS
No new or special analytical procedures are required for this product. A cross reference table appears in the Appendix listing standard analytical procedures used at J. F. Queeny Plant, w. c. Kruisnrieh Plant, and at the Anniston Plant. These procedures are currently used on similar products.
TOXICITY AND HAZARDS
No unusual toxicity or hazards are expected with the raw materials or finished blend. The process is a simple blending procedure

*nd no hazardous reactions should occur between the various com ponents . Aroclor 5442 and CDP have baan known materials produced by Monsanto for many years. CDP has been used in Pydraul fluid formulations. (Notei Current specific toxicity information is being obtained from the Madical Department on these materials and it is suggested these be included in the Appendix of this report.) General Precautions include the following! 1. Goggles should be worn where splashing or spillage may occur. 2. Any material in contact with the skin should be removed by
washing with soap and water, 3. Prolonged or repeated exposure to the skin may cause irritation
due to removal of skin oils with resulting dryness and chapping. 4. Material may be irritating to sensitive skin areas and eyes.
In case of contact with eye tissue, flush copiously with water and then get medical attention. 5. In case of internal ingestion get immediate medical attention. (. Avoid inhaling volation material or mists. POLLUTION CONTROL No waste by-products are generated by this process. Used filtering material, flushings from the system during cleaning, as well as any spoiled product should be disposed of as dictated by local regulations. APPENDIX

The undiluted sample was olassed as praotieally non-toxic when administered orally to mixed sex rats. The acute oral LDsq was 10,250 mg/kg. Time to death was 12 hours to 2 days. Toxic eigne were reduoed appetite and aotivity, increasing weakness, eollapse, and death* IXirlng the study it appeared that the sample was slightly more toxio to females than to males. Macro* sooplo examination of those that suoouanbed revealed slight liver disooloration, hemorrhagic lungs, and acute gastrointestinal inflammation. Macroscopic examination of those that ware sacri ficed revealed slight liver disooloration and areas of lung con gestion in those receiving the higher doses, while those receiving the lower doses exhibited a normal vleoera.
The undiluted sample was olassed as slightly toxio when applied to and retained for 24 hours on the dipped intaot stein of mixed sex rabbits. The aoute minimal lethal dose was greater than 2000 but less than 3160 *g/kg Time to death was 4 to 6 days. Toxio signs ware greatly reduoed appetite, lethargy, mild diarrhea, inoreasing weakness, oollapse, and death. Maorosooplo examin ation of those that sucoumbed revealed an enlarged gall bladder, hemorrhagio lungsj slight liver disooloration and aoute gastro intestinal inflammation. Msoroscoplc examination of those that were saorlfloed revealed, in some oases, sreas of lung congestion and a slightly enlarged gall bladder. -
The undiluted sample was olassed as a mild irritant when applied to and retained for 24 hours on the olipped intaot skin of mixed sex rabbits. Maximum irritation (2/8) occurred 24 hours after
the sample was removed from the skin. The skin was normal (0/8)
96 hours after removal of the sample. The reaction at maximum irritation was well-defined erythema but no edema.
The undiluted Mmple was classed as a slight irritant when in stilled and retained for 24 hours in the conjunotival sao of the rabbit eye, Maxims irritation (2/110) occurred at 1 hour of 0ontact and oonaietad of slight erythema with no adama. The eye was normal at 24 hours of oontaot, at which time it was irrigated.
Whan male rate were exposed to the saturated vapor* of the sample,
at ambient temperature for 6 hours no dsaths ocourred, it was
oonoludad that the vapors of, this sample were praotloally non-toxic.
Maorosooplo examination of the saorlfloed animals revealed a normal
viscera.
