Insulate ... Quiets Noise FACTS ON GYPSUM PLASTER Gypsum Plaster gets its set or hardness by combining chemically with mixing water--recrystallizing as gypsum rock. Its maximum hardness is obtained as soon as set and dry. Its strength is many times that of lime with the same percentage of sand. -- The time of set of gypsum plaster depends on the amount of retarder added (unretarded gypsum sets in approximately 30 minutes after adding water), on the effect of sand used, on temperature and humidity conditions, purity of water used, cleanliness of mix ing boxes and tools, etc. Generally gypsum plaster sets slower in hot weather (due to greater effectiveness of retarder at higher temperatures). Set is corrected at the mill for average seasonal changes in weather conditions. The set of gypsum plaster can be simply adjusted to meet any abnormal condition on the job. The follow ing materials retard the set of gypsum plaster-- (a) Gold Bond Retarder (b) Glue water The following materials quicken the set of gypsum plaster-- (a) Gold Bond Accelerator __ (b) Lime (c) Ground set plaster (d) Portland Cement (e) Pulverized Alum and Zinc Sulphate (f) Water soluble mineral salts in general The hardness of a gypsum plaster wall depends primarily on the amount of sand present. Strength of plaster wall decreases in direct proportion to amount of sand used. A safe amount is two parts sand by weight to one part of plaster for scratch coat and three parts sand for brown coat. For two coat work, two and one-half parts can be used. For walls with high suction such as brick, clay or gypsum tile, three parts sand should be used both scratch and brown. One No. 2 shovel of sand averages about fifteen (15) pounds. On this basis the following table shows the approximate equivalent No. 2 shovels to parts by weight-- 1 part by weight sand 2 parts " " zy2 ...................; 3 ................................... 80 lb. Bag 7 No. 2 shovels 13 17 20 Gypsum Piaster (in form of gauging plaster) is added to lime putty finish to add strength and to keep lime from check cracking. Therefore, enough gauging to accomplish this must be added. A safe practice is to follow these proportions: By Volume--1 park gauging plaster to 3 parts lime putty. REMEDIES: (1) Add amount Gold Bond Accelerator (usually handful to the bag is suffi cient) necessary to give desired set. Sprinkle accelerator over dry plaster before mixing. or (2) Add handful screened dry set plaster droppings same way as accelerator. or (3) Add approximately one quart of Port land Cement or 15 lbs. unretarded . stucco to each bag of plaster. or (4) Add alum or zinc sulphate in pro portions two ounces per gallon water. QUICK SET: If plaster sets in box or before it can be darbied. REMEDIES: (1) Check to see if mixing box, tools, sand are clean and clean water used. (2) Use retarder or ground glue in amount needed for desired set. SHORT WORKING: If mortar works hard, does not carry sand, drops easily from wall. REMEDIES: (1) See if material is stored in dry place. (2) Add fresh plaster bag to bag. (3) Add 2 shovelfuls of slaked lime to each bag. (4) Decrease amount sand and water. IF PLASTERED WALL IS: PLASTER TROUBLES ____________________________. THE TROUBLE IS: Soft, white, chalky particularly over "Dry Out." Plaster dried be openings. PERFORATED A double bond grips the plas ter. A chemical bond occurs between the indented surface of the lath and the plaster. A mechanical bond is provided by the mushroom-like "keys" which form on the reverse side.
