The design results in a ductile iron hub that is lighter weight than an aluminum front hub assembly for comparable gross axle ratings, said Bill Ott, Gunitevice presi dent of engineering. When compared to Gunite's previous hub design, the hub offers a 12-lb weight reduction, Ott added. The hubs will be for Class 6, 7 and 8 highway tracks. The conver sion of suspension and differential cast ings to aluminum could affect the demand in the next few years. Applications produced via vertically parted molding now exceed 90% of the total shipments. . Valves '& Fittings--The 0-50 lb range (currently at 23% of total demand for this application) is expected to benefit from the increasing conversion of mal leable fittings in the future. Imports con tinue to be the main threat, however, especially from Asia- Construction Machinery--While 43% of the demand for this sector falls in the 0-50 and 51-150 lb range, conversion of castings from steel are forecast to in crease demand in the heavier weight classes..Suspension, differential and other rear-end vehicle castings are ex pected to increase applications. Steel With 592,000 tons of railroad casting shipments forecast for 2002, this applica tion represents-44% of the total market for steel castings. Castings for this sector de mand--including wheels, bolsters, side frames, couplets and yokes--are primarily in the 101-1000 lb casting range. The majority of the non-railroad cast ings are consumed in the lower (0-100 and 101-500 Jb) weight classes. Construction, Mining and Oil Field Equipment--The majority of the cast ings to thissector (which represents53% of nonrailroadsteel castings) are shown to be in the medium weight ranges. Truck--Nearly all of the shipments to the trucksector(which also includesmilitatyvehicles) are in the 0-100 and 101-500 lb range. Some applications are expected to be convertedto ductile iron in the future and reduce growth in this marketsector. Aluminum A total of 2.14 million tons of cast alu minum is forecast for2002. Motorvehicle consumption dominates the metal's ap plication at 60.5% of the total. As the engine block and cylinder head conver sion to aluminum accelerates, aluminum casting shipmentswill grow further. GM's lostfoamproductionofblocksandheads, Ford'suseof precision sand processes for blocks and the transplant automakers' modern casting /September 2001 production of heads via low-pressure permanent moldare expected to increase each process' output in the future. Motor Vehicles--Oiecast aluminum dominates this sector's consumption at 725.000 tons (52% of total). Aluminum castings produced by low-pressure per manent mold and lost foam, primarily used for cylinder heads, are forecast at 130,000and 100,000 tons, respectively. Shipments of semi-permanent mold aluminum castings are forecast at 268.000 tons, while the sand-cast alu minum process, used primarily for in take manifolds and blocks, is expected to produce 71,000 tons in 2002. S3 Casting Marketing is the Job of Every Foundry Operation I agree with the November 2000 editorial, "Not in the Casting Business Anymore," that castings are probably not the first choice for today's engi neers. 1 also agree that the foundry industry must take a different plan of attack and include marketing along with our sales efforts. My question is if our attitude must be adjusted. For example, must we try to create de mand for castings rather than eat an other foundry's lunch for our growth? 1 believe the answer is yes. Few shops (except the largest) can afford an in-house marketing person. 1 suspect most of us rely on the likes of MOLDING THE FUTURE ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND GREEN SAND ADDITIVE Piemix, Seacoal, Coatings, Releases and Other Specialty Products Hill and Griffith's ongoing, aggressive and Innovative Research & Development effort means customers are ready to meet new low Benzene emission regulations today. AFS, Non-Ferrous Founders'Society, the Aluminum Assn, and others to do the marketing on our behalf. Maybe AFS could sponsor periodic advertisements in non-foundryjournals proclaiming the benefits of castings. However, we cannot afford to sit idly by and expect associations to do it all. For starters, each of us in the indusby must be on the lookout for potential conversions. This is a sales function, but we must remember that we are all sales people for our foundry. We must keep our eyes and ears open when we visit customers and be on the lookout forpotential conversions. We must con tinually remind our sales force to look for conversions and new products that could utilize castings. Perhaps this is easier said than done for most smaller shops. How many shops with 50 em ployees actually have a full-time sales person who they can tell what to do, how to do it and when to do it? What about those of us who rely on reps for oursales? We have enough trouble mo tivating our reps to sell for us let alone spending time searching for casting op portunities that may or may not exist. I suspect, however, that it goes even deeper. When I read statementssuch as "castings may be brittle," and "we lack performance data,'i amsuspicious that there is a whole generation of design engineers that have had little exposure to castings as these quotes betray an ignorance regarding castings. Is this the foundry industry's fault or is this a func tion of academia? I suspect academia's view may- be that castings are an out dated'technology, and thattheirresponsibility is to educate their students in the newer technologies. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that inhaled crystalline silica in the form of quartz or cristobalite from occupational sources is carcinogenic to humans (IARC Group 1). Prolonged inhalation of silica dust may result in silicosis, a progressive, disabling, and sometimes fatal, lung disease. Avoid creating dusty conditions and use a NIOSH/MSHA approved dust respirator when Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) may be exceeded. See Material Safety Data Sheet for detailed information. Id/r7
