PERSONNEL EXPOSURE TO HEXACHLORI NATED ORGANICS AT THE CHLORINATED SOLVENTS PLANT SECOND HALF - 1978 DISTRI BUT I ON : CY BARRIOS ART BOURG L. D. ADCOCK JERRY DA IGRE DO 08RB89 CONFTDFNTTAl. ( ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SURVEY REPORT SECOND HALF - 1978 PERSONNEL EXPOSURE TO HEXACHLORINATED ORGANICS AT THE CHLORINATED SOLVENTS PLANT I NTRODUCTI ON A survey of personnel exposure to chlorinated hex com pounds was conducted between August 15 and October 15, 1978. Chemicals monitored were hexach1oroethane (TLV = 1,000 ppb), hexach1orobutadiene (TLV= 10 ppb), and hexach1orobenzene (TLV = 100 ppb). This report describes the time weighted average exposures of plant personnel over an 8 hour period. ANALYTICAL PARAMETERS A Hewlett-Packard, Model 5700A, gas chromatograph equipped with a Ni63 electron capture detector was used for the analyses. Chromatographic conditions follow: COLUMN: 10' X i" glass column, 15% Dexsil 300 on 80/100 MESH, 50/50 Gas Chrom Z - Gas Chrom W - (AW) DMCS treated. TEMPERATURE: Oven Detector Injector 2 40 C 2 60 C 260 C CARRIER GAS: 5% CHi,/95% Ar @ 40 cc/minute SAMPLE SIZE: 2 ul MONITORING PROCEDURE SP -- 1 personal sampler pumps were worn by employees while performing their normal duties. A V X 0.25" glass tube, pre packed with Poropak QS chromatographic column packing was t HEXACHLORINATED ORGANICS SECOND HALF 1978 Page - 2 - MONITORING PROCEDURE (continued) attached to the end of a 2 foot length of 3/16" X 1/8" tubing connected to the sample pump inlet. The tube assembly was attached to the employee's clothing in the vicinity of the air breathed by the employee. SAMPLE PREPARATION Samples were desorbed by placing the Poropak packing into 10 ml. of Hexane and shaking periodically for 1 hour. Analysis was then performed by electron capture detection gas chroma tography and the resulting peak areas measured via HewlettPackard 3380A integrator, calibrated daily. CALCULATIONS Parts per billion, by volume, exposures were calculated using the following equation: Pplb/(v)\ = nqL XX 2MWk-.-k--5---0-- Where: ng = nanograms from integrator data 2^.AS = liters occupied by 1 mole of gas at sampling conditions (25C, 760 mm pressure assumed) L = liters of air sampled MW = molecular weight of component RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Table I shows individual TWA exposures by job classification Table II is a summary of the average exposures by job classification. Table III is a comparison of hex survey data from the 1976 survey through the current survey. It can be assumed that the lower figures for the 1976 survey were due to less sensitive analytical methods. However all subsequent samples were analyzed by the method detailed in this report, one exception being use in. this survey of an integrator to calculate peak areas rather than using simple peak height to DO 088891 OONFTDFNTTAI HEXACHLORINATED ORGANICS SECOND HALF 1978 Page - 3 - RESULTS AND DISCUSSION (continued) determine amounts present in the samples. Actual sample analyses were performed by the environmental group at RD. Upon learning that the results were running lower than the previous surveys, often by a factor of 10 or more, a number of checks and verifica tions were instituted. The standard, the chromatograph, and all calculations were carefully rechecked by RSD personnel and all checked out as correct and accurate. We have apparently accom plished even more than expected with the concerted clean-up campaign to lessen hex exposure in the block. Over the past 10 months we have tried to eliminate as many surfaces that might collect hex-laden dust as possible. This included tearing out an unused reactor system, moving tool lockers out of the control room, and eliminating a number of odd cabinets and dust collec tors throughout the office and control room area. In addition, a special effort was made to thoroughly clean up the block including cleaning accumulated dust and grime from cabinets, light fixtures, lockers, etc., and washing down the plant itself from 3 to 5 times a week over a several month period. All ditches in the Per/Tet and hex area were cleaned out, the accumulated residue put in drums and hauled away for disposal. As a result, the only job classification group with an average exposure level above the action level (i the TLV) for any component was the laborers, two of whom were monitored while cleaning out some of the ditches in the Per/Tet area. All other exposure numbers were well below the TLV's. These figures can be expected to drop even further with the completion of changes planned over the next few months. These include installation of a positive pressure heating and air conditioning system (to be in operation by late October), installation of a divided locker room which will seperate con taminated work clothing from street clothing, installation of a washer/dryer for contaminated clothing, continuing the washing down of the Per/Tet area several times each week to prevent dust accumulation, major cleaning and minor structural changes in the shop area, and continued disposal of solid waste from the Per/Tet area. Another survey will be done after completion of these remaining changes. mrvO Sha ron Miller \ Chlorinated Solvents 00 08889?
