BIRD'S NEW WIND SEAL 80 SHINGLE MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT
The verdict is in, and according to contractors and distributors across the Northeast, the Wind Seal 80, Bird Incorporated's new standard measurement, 12-by-36-inch fiber glass-based
asphalt roofing shingle, is a resounding success.
"The product is the finest I've ever worked with. The cut (length of the shingle) is true. In fact, on my last job the roof prevented me from snapping a line until four feet up, but that didn't matter because every shingle was the same size. In addi tion, the shingles felt heavier and the bundles were much easier to handle."
Jim McNally, Cazeault Roofing, Osterville, MA
"The shingle is a great improvement over any previous product." Peter Fortin, Brolette & Fortin Roofing, Taunton, MA

"It looks and feels really good. I'm glad to see a
good alternative in a standard measurement fiber glass shingle."
John Feher, Feher Roofing, Denville, NJ
"I like the way it's made; it's heavy and has a lot
of body to it. It doesn't feel like an ordinary fiber glass shingle."
Sam Kersch, Brothers Roofing, Inc., Queens, NY
"It is the best fiber glass shingle I have ever seen." Butch Therberge, Therberge Roofing, Fall River, MA
"It looks and feels better than any other fiber glass shingle."
Bob Rosenthal, McDonald Metal & Roofing Supply, Brooklyn, NY
The Wind Seal 80 was developed in direct response to contractors' requests for a heavier weight, standard measurement product It features many product improvements: dimensional accuracy, reinforced tape-backing for 60 percent greater nail-holding power, improved sealing performance and wind resistance; a tougher sealant material with 90 percent more coverage, and packaging improvements including a stronger moisture resistant wrapper that, when com bined with more shingles in the bundle, provides easier bundle handling.
The shingle comes complete with a Class "A" U/L fire resistant rating and an exclusive -- the best in the business -- 20 year limited warranty with two full years of coverage up front.

Contractor question of the month: Why do fiber glass-based asphalt shingles carry a fire resistant rating that is greater than felt-based shingles'?
The inner construction of fiber glass based-asphalt shin gles consists of tough glass fibers pressed and dried into a glass mat, making the shingles less vulnerable to fire than felt(paper)-based shingles Thus, Underwriters Laborato ries has awarded fiber glass-based asphalt shingles a Class "A" rating as opposed to the Class "C" rating assigned to felt shingles. This can be a major sellihg'pdirit for potential customers. The fiber glass-based asphalt shingles also resist many of the problems associated with felt-based shingles including cupping, clawing, fishmouthing, expansion and contraction.

PLYMOUTH, MA CONTRACTOR ENJOYS WELCOME SURGE IN HOUSING AND REMODELING MARKETS
The improving national economy has fostered a rise in the number of new housing starts But it has also meant that for the first time in recent years, homeown ers have more discretionary income available and are spending again on remodeling, rebuilding and reroof ing In the Northeast United States, the area with the fargest number of older homes, the increased activity is a welcome arrival for many contractors Dick Vecchi is one of the breed of roofing contractors that analysts claim are the backbone of the industry. His Plymouth, MA-based remodeling and reroofing ousiness, Richard Vecchi & Sons, Home Improve ments, worked continuously throughout the summer and accumulated a large backlog of work for the tall months. Vecchi Home Improvements is staffed solely by the 48-year-old Vecchi and his two sons Paul and Dennis, contracting primarily for roofing applications and completing an average of two |obs per week, some times more The elder Vecchi's business plan is one that is employed by thousands of roofing contractors from coast to coast He does no advertising, relying strictly on word-of-mouth referrals. "In a small town like this," says Vecchi, "you do a good job because your reputa tion is at stake." Like many contractors across the Northeast, Vecchi is finding there are not only more people spending on nome improvements, but they're spending more wisely "Customers have become more knowledge-
Dtck Vecchi, secondfrom left, stands in the middle ofhis roofing crew: sons Dennis, left, and Paul, farnght, are joined by theircousin John Vecchi, second from right
able," says Vecchi "For example, I've noticed a lot of my customers insisting on fiber glass-based asphalt shingles after reviewing the differences between the newer fiber glass shingles and the older felt (paper)based products."
Vecchi uses a fiber glass-based asphalt roofing shingle produced by Bird Incorporated. "It's a quality product that the company stands behind," says Vecchi "The shingles carry the best U/L fire resistant rating (Class "A"), have a longer warranty than felt-based shingles and are more durable -- resisting many of the prob lems associated with felt, including expansion and contraction.
" I understand the company is committed to improving the quality of its fiber glass-based asphalt shingles," says Vecchi "That's why I'm really looking forward to using the new Wind Seal 80 product I *ve heard so much about. It has all of the company's recent prod uct improvements in addition to being standard measurement"
Bird Incorporated is also making a concerted effort to communicate with contractors in an effort to serve them better. The introduction of the Wind Seal 80 standard measurement, fiber glass-based asphalt shingle was made in direct response to a demand from contractors for a non-metric shingle It is now available throughout the Northeast.
Gary Zimmerman, Bird Incorporated's territory man ager who services Vecchi Home Improvements, is also one of the reasons why Vecchi is loyal to this company in particular " I want to prove to Dick and all of our cus tomers that we're listening and responding," says Zim merman Vecchi adds, "I like to go with people I can trust I know they're standing behind me." Bird Incor porated's customer-service campaign is an indication that the Company values its customers and is striving to meet the needs of contractors
Dick Vecchi, like many other contractors, is enjoying the surge in the building and remodeling industry But even before the recent surge, Vecchi did a thriving business by practicing a simple, yet wise, principle Says Vecchi, "Every time I do a roof I try to do it as if it's my own house."
