It engages in materials surveys and other special assignments, and provides the Department of Defense with technical data and advice on re search and development programs on plastics. Army, Navy, and Air Force installations, and contractors and other suppliers of needs for defense may request information from this center directly. Qualified requesters may obtain PLASTEC Reports from the ASTIA Document Service Center, Arlington Hall Station. Arlington 12, Va. Data originating in this center are available to the general public through the Office of Technical Services. Department of Commerce, Annex 1, Washington 25, D. C. Harry E. Pebly, Jr. . Molzon March 1962 PLASTICS TECHNICAL EVALUATION CENTER PICA TINNY ARSENAL - DOVER, NEW JERSEY OLX 3649 ABSTRACT Selected references pertaining to the toxicity and|or health hazards present during the fabrication of plastics and their normal use are listed. References on health hazards of plastics in medi cal applications are treated in a separate PCASTEC note. These items are cross-indexed according to (1) type or class of plastic material; (2) subject such as: curing agent, dermatosis, dust, fire, health hazard; and (3) author. The sources searched included: Plastics Abstracts, Pro ceedings of both the Annual Conferences of the Society of Plastics Engineers and the Reinforced Plastics Division of the Society of the Plastics Industry, Applied Science and Technology Index, Index Medicus, Resin. Rubber. Plastics Yearbook, and the AST1A Report Bibliography on Plastics. The bibliography consists of 73 items. i OLI 3650 CONTENTS ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION ORGANIZATION SECTION 1. AUTHOR INDEX Page i 1 2 3 4 5 14 16 18 ii OLI 3651 INTRODUCTION Mention of a particular commercial product nei ther constitutes an endorsement by the Plastics Technical Evaluation Center, nor a voucher for the accuracy of a manufacturer's claim unless specifically noted. Dufing the fabrication of many plastic components (ie glass reinforced laminates, foams) some chemicals are used which present handling problems because of their toxicity, skin irritant potential, flammability, etc. The laminate may be sanded or cut during subsequent fabrication processes, thereby producing dust and possibly vapors which present health hazards. Plastics in the finished state (completely fabricated) are used in many applications such as food packaging, containers for drugs and medicines, surgical implants, clothing, and house furnishings - all instances in which information on the-possible health hazards involved is desirable. A literature search has been conducted for articles pertaining to the toxicity and]or health hazards present during both the various fabrication processes and the end use of plastic materials and products. Articles on the health hazards of plastics in medical applications (surgical implants, etc.) have been treated in a separate PLASTEC Note, "Plastics in the Medical Industry: A Cross-Indexed Bibliography"; and they are not included here. Some key words used in searching the literature were: poison, health hazard, dust, toxicity, flammability, and safety. While some references are included on packaging and the effects of radiation, these were not major items in this search. 1 OLI 3652 ORGANIZATION The 73 selected references resulting from the search are listed in a bibliography, and are cross-referenced in terms of material, subject, and author. The materials index identifies those references which pertain to a specific plastic, such as: epoxy, polyester, polystyrene, polyurethane, and reinforced plastics. Some references discussed families of plastics, and these are listed under "Plastics (Groups of Materials)**: therefore, one should check both the references under this item and those under the particular type of plastic material in which one is interested. The subject index identifies those references pertaining to a specific subject, such as: curing agents, dermatosis, dust, fire, health hazard, packaging, toxicity. In those cases in which the reference came from an abstract, the key words for the subject index were determined frdm the title and the abstract. The articles were not reviewed. The author index permits one to find all the listed articles published by each author, and also to make a quick search of the references in order to determine if a particular article is included. In those cases in which the author was not mentioned, the corporate author or the publication is listed. All the sources searched are given in a separate listing. They include technical conference papers, abstracts and extracts prepared by organiza tions closely allied with the plastics industry, abstracts covering the medical literature, and those covering a variety of applied sciences. A wide coverage was obtained by use of these diverse sources. * A a 1. SOURCES SEARCHED o APPLIED SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INDEX: 1958, 1959, i960 H. W.
