I'd renamh thisProject (For the record...) Galapagos Islands Habitat Restoration Program Background: Nearly four years ago a good customer of Monsanto noticed invasive weeds threatening native habitat of several rare species on the ecologically rich Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. The archipelago is well-known for its impact on Charles Darwin in solidifying his Theory of Evolution after a trip there in the 1830s. The Galapagos Islands have been protected since 1959 by Ecuador through a very progressive National Park Service plan that protects the great majority of species and land mass on the Galapagos. There are also about 12K residents who fish, farm or support tourism in the 19 islands of the archipelago. The Charles Darwin Research Station, funded entirely by contributions outside Galapagos (most European and U.S.) does research into protection of wildlife and habitat. The Darwin Station has Monsanto to help conduct research to control several invasive weeds threatening the habitat of the dark rumped petrel, scalesia forests and the islands' namesake giant tortoise. We began research one year and one half ago and have had some good results. We are also using the story to underscore the environmental sensitivty and positive environmental fate of Roundup herbicide in stores, media interviews and hopefully a Roundup image campaign possibly broadcast next year. "- Opportunity: Project outside the United States gives it a global feel. Both U.S. and Ecuador employees are involved in project in partnership with one of the most respected research insititutions in the world, the Darwin Center. Different methods of weed control are being researched to provide an "integrated" plan. Our committment to Galapagos is considered by those of us involved as long-term and sustained. There are other opportunities for resources there.Money in particular is requested, including feral animal control and incentives to farmers to help control invasive weeds so they don't encroach into the-protected Park areas of-the islands. Benefits: There is a business connection to this project in that we are hoping to sell Roundup in the Galapagos as the research shows results. The offering of Roundup would replace older weed control products like diesel oil and 2,4D.This change would be beneficial' to the environment. There are strong visual images that could be conveyed from the Galapagos project worldwide, as the Galapagos is considered an ecological treasure. Partners: Current are Charles Darwin Research Station, Ecuador National Park Service, the Agricultural Ministry of Ecuador and Monsanto. Possible are partners such as AID and World Bank. Resources Necessary: None at this time from Corporate. Croo is funding work DSW 135307 STLCOPCB4035284 YOUR RIGHT TO KNOW We also invite anyone in who wants to see the plant and learn more about us. OJ O' o share a common goal with the Environmental Protection Agency: to improve the environment in a way that is cost-cffectivc and workable. Monsanto's goal is to not only comply with regulations, but to go beyond them when we can. Risks/Downsides: Only a very small group of employees are currently involved. We must be very careful not to overly hype our work there, or we will lose credibility with our partners in a fragile relationship. I believe this progran has merit for consideration but I think more creativity is necessary to find an opportunity in Galapagos that works for Monsanto as a whole.
