fgt ALTERNATIVES FOR ASBESTOS AND ASBESTOS - CONTAINING MATERIALS
This ig la reference to your letter of 12JUL76 to R.P. Carter on possible Candidateg for replacing aabeetog containing Materials.
1. Marinite
With the exception of R-680 there is no substitute for Molten Metal Marinite in ingot casting operations. The ceraaic headers Mentioned in Mr. Reichelt's letter are Made with R-680.
2. Asbestos doth and Paper
Cressona and Yancouver are evaluating the use of woven Fiberglass spacers for netal separation. For detailed infomatlon on this natter we suggest you contact Mr. F. J. Bures at Cressons and Mr. B. V. Moore at Yancouver.
Ceraaic fiber paper such as Carborundum's Fiberfrex paper can replace asbestos paper in soae applications; however, the ceranic fiber product does not have the strength characteristics of asbestos.
3. Asbestos Board Asbestos board used to cover transfer troughs and filter
boxes can be replaced with vacuum formed ceramic fiber boards such as C-E Refractories Thernotact A Board or Babcock & Vilcox M-Board. For trough applications only, an asbestos free Marinite, designated Marinite XL is adequate for trough covers.
One technique used in some plants as a replacement for asbestos covers on filter boxes is to lay a blanket of Johns-ManviUe Cerablanket (a ceraaic fiber blanket) on top of the netal in the inlet area during downtime.

4. Asbestos gloves
There la a commercially available treated asbestos product used in making asbestos glores and other materials. Information on these products can be obtained from: Southern Asbestos Co.f P. 0. Box 10516, Charlotte, Korth Carolina 28237 Attn: Mr. A. Smith (704) 372-2880.
For your Information I have enclosed a brochure on Refrasil, a Tory Interesting silica fiber product. This benchure may offer some suggestions as a possible, but costly, substitute for asbestos products.

RE: ALTERNATIVES FOR ASBESTOS AND ASBESTOS-CONTAINING MATERIALS
I have received the attached letter from G- K. Reichelt, Ingot Plant Metallurgist. Please note the use of asbestos paper and asbestos board. Do you have some good substitutes that you recommend we try?
Asbestos cloth and paper is also being used in our finishing mills for separation of aluminum from steel racks during thermal practices. We also need a good substitute for these uses.
Would appreciate any suggestions.

RE: ALTERNATIVES FOR ASBESTOS-CONTAINING MATERIALS Ref: Your Letter of May 25, 1976_______________________
In regards to the use of asbestos containing material used in the Ingot Plant, at present we are still using the following:
Marinite Headers and dams made from this material are still being used. Programs are underway to replace the marinite headers with ceramic headers. The 8" diameter ceramic header molds are being fabricated at ATC. The 15" diameter ceramic header design is on "hold" until we have finalized a header design (both in marinite and ceramic) which will give us the quality casting speed relationship desired.
We have not found an adequate substitute for marinite dams. Substitutes tried either break when "damming" off a position or are attacked by molten aluminum
We are not machining any marinite in-plant. All of the machining is performed at Caildon.
Other areas or products which use asbestos material are:
(Asbestos Gloves - Used in changing filters and handling 1 hot ingot.
Asbestos Paper - Used in a number of areas, primarily packing bottom blocks.
Asbestos Board - Used to cover troughs or filters to retain heat in these areas.
'The above three products are still being used and no substitute or program is in progress to find a substitute for them.
