Building 21st century infrastructure for our 21st century economy is a surefire way to create jobs and boost U.S. competitiveness. In addition to highway, bridge, water and rail projects, development of energy infrastructure is a proven job creator. Even better, it does not rely on taxpayer dollars. According to a recent study, $1.34 trillion of private sector investment in energy infrastructure could support more than 1 million jobs each year on average through 2035. And the benefits don't end with construction. Energy infrastructure pipes in lasting economic benefits to homes and businesses by supplying reliable, affordable energy - day in and day out. American households saved $1337 in 2015 thanks to lower costs for utilities and other energy-related costs. Reduced power and materials costs for a range of industries have given U.S. businesses a competitive Pipelines are one of the safest, most environmentally friendly ways to transport the energy that fuels the U.S. economy, safely delivering crude oil, petroleum products and natural gas every day. Using cutting edge technology, operators can scan pipelines inside and out before and after they are put in service. Our goal is zero incidents, and industry pursues that goal through API's internationally recognized industry standards that promote safety and reliability. As Congress and the administration consider a new infrastructure plan, meaningful public input needs to be balanced with the need for certainty and efficiency in the permitting process to avoid unnecessary delays. Policymakers should also avoid restrictive policies on steel sourcing, however well-intentioned. Noting that American steel companies aren't configured to supply all the needs of pipeline producers, economic experts recently wrote: "Forcing pipeline companies to use domestic steel would raise prices and delay projects for years, leading to layoffs and lost job opportunities for tens of thousands of Americans... Mandating the use of domestic steel for pipelines would require steel manufacturers to retool their factories. The renovation and refitting costs could more than double the price of pipeline parts and slow down production." Energy infrastructure promotes job growth, provides reliability and affordability and creates environmental benefits - that's a winning combination. What's more, 81 percent of American voters support expanding it. The Trump administration's focus on building infrastructure is welcome. America's natural gas and oil industry is ready with the skilled workers, technology and investment to do our part. Sincerely, Jack N. Gerard President & CEO API New England Pays the Price for Missed Infrastructure Opportunities A new study from ISO New England finds there's a better than 80 percent chance that some or all of the region faces rolling blackouts in the near future - chiefly because it can't get enough natural gas when there's peak winter demand. The study underscores the region's lack of sufficient natural gas infrastructure. Learn more about the New England infrastructure constraints, and the solution lying right beneath our feet.
