AHOCLORS IN SELF-EXTINGUISHING EPOXY RESIN APPLICATIONS
Considerable Interest has been displayed in the development of flame retarding epoxy resins. To aid the manufacturers of epoxy compounds Monsanto has completed some initial evaluation work on the use of Aroclor compounds in epoxy resin adhesives. This data shows that the use of the liquid Aroclor products in an aliphatic amine cured system results in self-extinguishing formulations when the liquid Aroclors are used at a 20 parts per 100 parts of resin basis. The reduction of the Aroclor by 5 parts and the incorporation of 5 parts of antimony oxide results in materials with still further improved flame retardancy. The use of liquid Aroclor products in aliphatic amine cured systems also improves flexural strength and compressive yield strength. They have little effect on tensile strength. Heat distortion temperature and compressive strength are lowered slightly. The use of solid Aroclor compounds in phthalic anhydride cured epoxy systems greatly improves such important properties as compressive yield strength, flexural strength, and tensile properties. Compressive yield strengths are comparable to the control. Heat distor tion temperature is lowered slightly. The data in Table I, attached, has been obtained in preliminary laboratory studies, however, its importance to the industry is such that these preliminary results are offered to manufacturers who may wish to evaluate this interesting Aroclor applications in their own laboratories.
