The American Petroleum Institute (API) represents a broad swath of operators and contractors working offshore in the Gulf of America. Companies working in this area interact with your agencies on a daily basis for plans, permits, leases, royalties, and a host of other issues.
President Trump's Executive Order 14172 "Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness" required the Secretary of the Interior to change the name of the former "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America", but has unfortunately left some operators with an unclear sense of what language they should use in engagement with the Department, how the Department will handle historical references, and any impacts the change has on documents, reporting, accounting, operations and leases.
We would encourage your Department of the Interior agencies to provide operators and others working in the Gulf of America public guidance on how to handle this change in their official documents and engagements.
