Thr reason for this lira in the fart Hint eantlenaation nf water vapor will inevitably occur on fhr under aide nf the roof. This rnudrnsnltnii occurs Ih-cbiisc nf the fact that the absolute humidity, the acltial percentage nf moisture in thr air, is always higher insidr a building inlinhited lay human brines than outside. The amount nf moisture in thr interim- is further inrrrnsrd by the fact flint thr inside temperature is iiivariubly hijiher. and thr air will hold more water vapor without bccmriifig saturated. If the under side nf the inm roofing is exposed. drops nf water will condense thereon, due to the lower lempcrnture. and may run down the sides of the building. This condition, known ns sweating, may lo materially reduced by placing rough hoards ou tlie roof immediately henenfh the sheet metal, the hoards acting ns nti insulator. Plastering the underside of the roof timbers trill have the same effect, but cfTii-ciit ventilation must be provided by means of windows and ventilators along the ridge. The method of applying a galvanized iron roof is not very difficult imr complicated. The timbering may be very light. The sheets arc fastened to purlins, which are sup ported in suitable positions on the rafters, spaced at inter vals of C or t* feet. The sheets arc nailed to the timbers t with galvanized nails or screws, using galvanized washers ttniler the bend of Mm? nail, to prevent leakage thru the hole. Tim screws are not twisted in place with n screw driver, as might he expected, hut are hammered info place, more quickly. The threads arc present only to permit with drawal of the screw without injury t the sheet. Screws r.rr placed in the center corrugation and in outside ones, and always in the ridge, uni in the valley, which serves as f* n small drainage gutter. The outside screws are not driven in until the adjacent sheet has ltccu lapped over. ,1/nith /!.t0 fnfic l-t ASBESTOS - -- TTu* purlin4. Mtirrtt HUM ASBESTOS ' - Packings--Reasons for Some Failures Jlv Fitting, ti. Lhaiiy. F. I. H. I.. Assoc, lust. N. A.' There is no article perhaps which can W *o damned or praised ns Packing for the reason that failure brings in its train so many disastrous results, while efficient and dur able Parking contributes so very iiiueb to the satisfactory running nf the ninchiiiery in which it is fitted. Speaking with long and intimate knowledge of the manufacturing and ndministrntive side, I have no hesita tion iu stating that the majority nf had results are due primarily to luo main causes. First the lack of practical knowledge liv Imyers and secondly carelessness in treat ment. The uMi-prariiral buyer looks at the matter almost entirely from a price basis and so by adopting that attitude Wings his circle of suppliers down to till- employment of cheap material and low prices, with an immediate handicap to the Kngim-er who will naturally fail to get the Wat re sults out nf inferior article*. The first cost does not neces sarily mean economy but on the contrary it has been amply proved that a higher but reasonable price that permits the employment nf first grade materials has a substantial re flection in maintenance costs, gives infinitely less trouble to the Engineer and sn saves Inlaw expense-, and by that extra durability ami efficiency, which can generally he ox- |H-elrd from high grade specialties, actually results in diminished expense. The proof that this statement is correct is Mu- fact that wlu-re buyers are ennvrrlrd to this doctrine, it is rarely that the purchase nf cheHp and inferior Packings is reverted to. Om' important point in this connection is tile placing of orders for Packings of well-known Brands. It is a moral eerlaiuly that milkers nf high-grade goods must maintain their standard and this gives the necessary safe guard to tin- buyer amt engineer. This is particularly noticeable with the vast number of Internal brake shoes now employed, and tt naturally follows that with oil nu the lining u change In brake acllnn is frequently experienced. * The heat of friction wtll burn oil or grease to a hard carbon, thus forming n glare. When the oil Is first applied, it will re duce Ihe friction utmost to zero. It may also cause a gloxe to form, and later. If the brakes become wet. they will not hold well unless ihe pressure la sulTiclent to force the water from between tlic friction surfaces, They thru lend to grab.
