Sun Sentinel: Jewish schools praise Gov. Scott's security funding proposal
Jewish schools praise Gov, Scoffs security ftuadinsi proposal Sun Sentinel Sergio Carmona October 19, 2017
Jewish schools in South Florida proudly appreciate Florida Gov. Rick Scott's recent proposal to push for $1 million in the next budget to help cover security at Jewish schools throughout the state.
This proposal, which Scott recently announced at the Katz Hillel Day School of Boca Raton, comes after a wave of anti-Semitic threats in the past year. Recent incidents have included bomb threats and swastikas in predominately Jewish neighborhoods.
The Florida Legislature will bring up Scott's proposal in sessions beginning in January, 2018. If the legislature accepts Scott's proposal, the next budget would be the second time Florida has funded security at Jewish schools. The state first authorized public money for Jewish school security this year, starting with a $654,000plus pool for schools in nine counties. However, Scott's recent proposal would expand eligibility for all Jewish day schools in the state to cover bulletproof glass, fencing, video cameras and other measures.
"Every student deserves to go to a school where they feel safe," Scott told reporters at the Katz Hillel Day School.
Maya Scwartz, head of school for Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy in Palm Beach Gardens, said, "Meyer Academy is pleased with Gov. Scott's recognition of the important issue of anti-Semitism, and the need to ensure all children are safe at school. We appreciate that he has brought this critical issue to the forefront of the conversation."

Richard Cuenca, head of school for David Posnack Jewish Day School in Davie, said, "The safety of our students and staff is a priority for our school, and we are grateful that the governor wants to continue helping improve the security of Jewish schools."
Rochelle Brand, head of school at Sha'arei Bina Torah Academy for Girls in Hollywood, noted, "We at Sha'arei Bina Torah Academy for Girls are greatly appreciative of Gov. Scott's security proposal for Jewish schools as it will further enable us to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, teachers and staff. "
