Board m em bers from acro ss BIO 's industry secto rs will be in W ashington, D .C., at th a t tim e to p articipate in BIO 's A nnual Legislative Day FlyIn and w ould ap preciate g rea tly the o p p o rtu n ity to d iscu ss concrete w ays in which our industry can help President Trum p achieve our shared policy goals and encourage the continued growth and success of the biotechnology industry.
BIO is the w orld's largest association representing the in te rests of the biotechnology com m unity, with over 1,000 m em bers that range from sm all start-up com panies to Fortune 50 com panies, and include academ ic research institutes, life science investors, and state and regional econom ic developm ent o rg an iza tio n s in 46 sta te s and Puerto Rico. O ur m em bers are at the cuttingedge of technological invention th a t is helping to cure the m ost serio u s diseases, secure U.S. energy independence through renewable sources, sustainably feed a growing world while raising farm incom es, and address our m ost challenging national security problem s - including global food security, biodefense, and pandem ic preparedness.
Biotechnology com panies are overw helm ingly sm all start-ups and early-stage com panies. The biosciences field em ploys 1.66 million Am erican w orkers d ire ctly and su p p o rts 7.5 m illion additional U.S. jo b s, including m any in the agricultural, renewable energy, and bio-based product sectors that help fuel Am erica's rural econom y. From 2001-2014, total U.S. bioscience em ploym ent increased 9.7% , com pared to 5 .4 % in the overall private se cto r - reflecting a strongly growing part of the Am erican economy.
These im pressive econom ic im pact num bers are dependent on good public policy. In yo u r role, you will be at the cen ter of im portant policy debates im pacting the progress of biotechnology, including the future of regulations im pacting agricultural biotechnology and the Renewable Fuel Standard. We would w elcom e the opportunity to discuss these topics with you and your relevant staff.
