SAB draft for AD signature
From: Granger Morgan [mailto:gm5d@andrew.cmu.edu] Sent: Tuesday, May 09, 2017 10:42 PM To: Pruitt, Scott <Pruitt.Scott@epa.gov> Subject: Message from Granger Morgan, former chair, SAB
Dear Administrator Pruitt,
I write as a former member and former chair of the EPA Science Advisory Board.
I have been reading speculation in the press about plans you may have to drastically modify the membership criteria and the roll of the EPA's Congressionally-chartered Science Advisory Board.
The SAB has long had an open nomination process in order to seek expertise from a wide range of institutions. This has resulted in selection of members from academia, industry and NGOs who are first and foremost outstanding scientists.
Outstanding scientific expertise has always been the overriding criterion for membership on the SAB so that the Agency, and the Administrator, can be informed by the best available balanced scientific advice.
There are well established norms by which to assess the quality of a scientist - refereed publication, citation counts, memberships in professional and honorary societies, etc. I urge you to continue to make those criteria the primary basis for selecting members of the SAB.
Yours, Prof. M. Granger Morgan http://www.cmu.edu/epp/people/faculty/m-granger-morgan.html
