H-Reports Absorption (Skin) - Ability of some chemicals to pass through the skin and enter the bloodstream - sometimes in amounts sufficient to cause ill effects. ACGIH - American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists; an organization of professional personnel in governmental agencies or educational institutions engaged in occupational safety and health programs. ACGIH develops and publishes recommended occupational exposure limits for hundreds of chemical substances and physical agents. See TLV. Acute-.Single, short term, or of high intensity with rapidly developing effects. As a single oral dose; a short single vapor exposure. Examples arehives, skin rashes, wheezing, and difficult breathing. Anemia -.A condition in which the blood is deficient in red blood cells, in hemoglobin, or in total volume. Symptoms include paleness of the skin, lips or nail beds. 4 Anesthesia - Loss of sensation or feeling. _ Anesthetic - A chemical that causes a total or partial loss of sensation. Asthma - A disease characterized by recurring attacks of difficult breathing, wheezing and coughing, due to spasms of the smaller airways. (C) - Ceiling concentration. See Ceiling limit or value. Carcinogen - A substance or agent that can cause a growth of abnormal tissue or tumors in Huiiians or animals. Maximum concentration to which an employee can be exposed, even instantaneously, without protective equipment. Central nervous system - The brain and spinal cord. These organs supervise and coordinate the activity of the entire nervous system. Cholinesterase - An enzyme that stops nerves from "firing". Cholinesterase inhibitor - A substance that keeps cholinesterase from doing its job - nerves continue to "fire". Chronic - Prolonged, long term and/or repeated with slowly developing effects. Chronic effect - Those signs and symptoms that develop from repeated exposures (month to a lifetime) to low levels of a substance. Examples include cancer and irreversible damage to certain organs. Chronic studies - Involve repeated exposures to low concentrations of a chemical substance over a long period of time -- the majority of the lifetime of test animals (1 to 2 years in rodents). CNS - Central nervous system. Conjunctivitis - Inflammation of the conjunctiva, the delicate membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the eyeballs. Cornea - The transparent part of the covering of the eyeball. Corrosive - Any material that causes visible permanent destruction of tissues (bums) at the site of contact. Cyanosis - Blueness of the skin, generally caused by lack of oxygen. Depressant - A substance that reduces a body function. Dermal - Related to the skin. Dermal Study - A study in which a substance is applied to the skin of an animal (usually rabbit) to determine whether absorption takes place to a great enough degree to cause toxicity. Dermal toxicity - Adverse effects resulting from absorption of the material through the skin. DOT - Department of Transportation Edema - An abnormal accumulation of fluid in the tissues; swelling. Effect - Any change from normal in response to some stimulus; it may be desirable or undesirable. One ounce U.S. is about 28 grams and one pound is 454 grams. One teaspoon of sugar weighs about 8 grams. G.I. OR GI - Gastrointestinal. g/kg - Grams per kilogram; an expression of dose used in oral and dermal toxicology testing to indicate the grams of substance dosed per kilogram of animal body weight. Gastrointestinal - Stomach and intestines. Good warning properties - The odor and/or irritancy of a material in the air is adequate to warn most people of excessive exposure levels. Hazard - The potential for causing harm. For chemicals, hazard equals toxicity times exposure. Hazardous material - Any substance which is a physical hazard or a health hazard. Health hazard - A chemical for which there is statistically significant evidence based on at least one study conducted in accordance with established scientific principles that acute or chronic health effects may occur in exposed employees. The term "health hazard" includes chemicals which are carcinogens, toxic or highly toxic agents, reproductive toxins, irritants, corrosives, sensitizers, hepatoxins, nephrotoxins, neurotoxins, agents which act on the hematopoietic system, and agents which damage the lungs, skin eyes, or mucous membranes. Hematologic - Referring to the blood. Hematopoietic system - Blood forming mechanisms of the body (e.g. spleen, bone marrow). IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer. A group of scientists which evaluates and classifies materials for their potential to cause cancer. Industrial Hygiene Guide (IHG)- A Dow time-weighted average exposure IHG guideline which is not expected to cause injury to employees exposed up to eight hours per day, forty hours per week for their working lifetime. The IHG does not represent a fine line between safe and unsafe exposure levels. The IHG may be internally developed or based on an outside source (TLV for example) but it is usually less than or equal to the values proposed by outside sources. Inflammation - A local response to cellular injury that is marked by capillary dilation, white blood cell infiltration, redness, heat or pain. Ingestion - The taking in of a substance through the mouth; swallowing. Inhalation - The act of breathing in. This is the most common route of entry for chemicals. LC50 - Lethal Concentration - 50%: A statistically derived figure representing the concentration of a material in air which would be expected to kill 50% of the test subjects in a specified period of time or upon exposure for a specified time. LD50 - Lethal Dose - 50%: A statistically derived figure representing the amount of material expected to kill 50% of the test subjects in a specified period of time or upon exposure for a specified time. Lethal Dose (LD) -An amount of a substance that is sufficient to kill a test animal. Lethargy - General tiredness, drowsiness or indifference. Long-term exposure - Term usually connoting exposures measured in months or years. Low hazard - Indicates that injury will not occur readily under responsible occupational conditions and, should effects occur, they will be mild, heal or disappear rapidly and spontaneously upon reduction in exposure, and will not leave scars or other aftereffects. mg - Milligram; a metric unit of weight. There are 1,000 milligrams in one gram (g) of a substance. One gram is equivalent to almost 4/100th of an ounce. mg/kg - Milligrams per kilogram: an expression of toxicological dose. mg/m3 - Milligrams per cubic meter; a unit used to express concentrations of dusts, gases, fumes, or mists in air. Nausea - Tendency to vomit, feeling of sickness of the stomach. Neurotoxic - A material that affects the nerve cells and may produce emotional or behavioral abnormalities NIOSH - National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the Public Health Service, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Federal agency which recommends occupational exposure limits for various substances and assists OSHA in occupational safety and health investigations and research. NTP - National Toxicology Program. NTP publishes an Annual Report on Carcinogens, a listing of potential carcinogens. Odor threshold - The lowest concentration detectable by the sense of smell. Oral - Through the mouth. Oral toxicity - Adverse effects resulting from taking a substance into the body via the mouth. OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Federal Agency with safety and health regulatory and enforcement authorities for most U.S. industry and business. PEL - Permissible Exposure Limit; the legally enforced exposure limit for a substance established by OSHA regulatory authority. The PEL indicates the permissible concentration of air contaminants to which nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed eight (8) hours a day, forty (40) hours a week, over a working lifetime (30 years) without adverse health effects. Respiratory disease - A disease which affects the lungs or the respiratory tract. Respiratory irritant - Any chemical that produces a reversible inflammatory effect on the respiratory system. Respiratory sensitizer - See Sensitizer. Respiratory tract - The breathing system; includes the lungs and air passages (trachea or "windpipe", larynx, mouth, and nose). Reversible effect - One which can be characterized and measured, but which does not persist when causative agent is removed. Routes of entry - The means by which material may gain access to the body, for example, inhalation, skin contact, and swallowing. Sensitizer - A substance which, on first exposure, causes little or no reaction in man or test animals but which, on repeated exposure, may cause a marked response not necessarily limited to the contact site. Skin sensitization is the most common form of sensitization in the industrial setting; allergic skin reactions include symptoms such as rash and hives. Some chemicals also cause respiratory sensitization with symptoms such as sneezing, difficult breathing, wheezing, etc. which can be severe. "SKIN" - A notation, sometimes used with PEL or TLV exposure data; indicates that the stated substance may be absorbed by the skin, mucous membranes, and eyes - either airborne or by direct contact - and that this additional exposure should be considered part of the total exposure. Skin absorption - Ability of some hazardous chemicals to pass directly through the skin and enter the bloodstream. STEL - Short Term Exposure Limit; ACGIH terminology. See TLV. Symptom - Subjective signs of a disturbance in normal function. Systemic effects - Adverse effects caused by a substance which affects the body in a general way rather than at the site of contact. Subchronic - Repeated dosings or exposures that may last up to 1 year. Target organ - A specific organ of the body that is attacked by a toxic substance. For example, overexposure to carbon tetrachloride can cause liver damage. Teratogens - Chemicals that cause birth defects in a developing fetus when the mother is exposed to the material during her pregnancy. TLY - Threshold Limit Value; a term used by ACGIH to express the airborne concentration of a material to which nearly all persons can be exposed day after day, without adverse effects.
